Year 11 Food Studies- Review and Reflection

Year 11 Food Studies is a practical and theoretical subject that is offered at St. Peter’s College. With new facilities at the Clyde North Campus, students have expressed their excitement in cooking a range of recipes which fit in with the theory being taught in our state of the art kitchen, along with being challenged by the theory surrounding cultural influence on food choice, influences on food availability and the history/origin of food in Australia throughout Unit 1.

One thing that Food Studies taught me is where around the world our food comes from, from production to plate. We do many activities that help us to not only understand how to prepare the ingredients and dishes, but also how to appreciate them and their unique origins. The coursework is also fun and inclusive, you learn to manage your time effectively, how to collaborate and communicate with your classmates, how to use the many various tools and utensils for cooking, and why sustainability is so important to the future of food; the list goes on. I can speak on behalf of my classmates when saying Food Studies ticks all the boxes of a hands-on, informative, appreciative, and a one-of-a-kind subject. Also, who wouldn't want to eat the delicious food that you get to make?

Year 11 Food Studies has been one of the best subject choices I've made out of my time in St Peters. Food Studies has a wide variety of dishes you can make within the topics we learn which helps to reinforce the theory, for example made Lemon Myrtle Shortbread as lemon myrtle is an Indigenous ingredient. Other topics we explore include hygiene and safety whilst you’re in the kitchen, agriculture, Indigenous food and culture, Cuisines which influence Australia food culture and spices. The food studies teachers are very supportive in both the practical and theory classes which helps to boost our confidence and understanding. I've enjoyed Year 11 Food Studies Unit 1 as its very interesting and interactive... I mean, WHO DOESN'T LIKE COOKING!?!? I couldn’t recommend it anymore!

Food Studies leads to some amazing career opportunities including in the areas of food science, teaching, hospitality, product development and health. Students appreciate the range of assessment tasks accessible for all abilities including research tasks, written reports and practical activities which ensures everyone can work towards achieving their best! This subject is offered at both the Cranbourne and Clyde North Campuses, if you would like to know more, please don’t hesitate to speak to Miss Sarah Lang (Cranbourne) or Miss Carol Whimpey (Clyde North).
