Athletics Carnival

On Thursday, 7 May 2021, with the sun shining brightly we made our way to Casey Fields for the 2021 Athletics Carnival. The stadium was awash with the colour of each House proudly on display. As usual the senior students came up with very creative and clever costumes that represented the fun and spirit of this wonderful event. Having missed this carnival last year due to COVID, every student and staff member were eager to fully embrace the day. Records were broken as students displayed amazing talent and skills in all track and field events.

The competition was fierce, but it was Kolbe and Glowrey battling it out right until the end. The final standings were:

PlaceHouse
1st Glowrey House
2nd Kolbe
3rd Romero
4th Augustine
5th MacKillop
6th Assisi
7th Avila
8thMarian

Glowrey now have won both campus carnivals having taken the Swimming Shield in term 1. Congratulations to all Houses, you made every effort to participate in all events making for a wonderfully successful carnival. The passionate cheering and unprecedently high attendance and participation rate made it incredibly difficult to determine which House won the House Spirit Shield After calculating the participation rate and attendance rates as well as the level of cheering and creative costumes the winner of House Spirit is Romero, followed by in order of ranking:

Assisi

Mackillop

Glowrey

Kolbe

Marian

Augustine

Avila

Well done all Houses and let us hope that the next awarding of the House Spirit Shield will be even more difficult.

My sincere thanks also to Mr Shannon Samaranayke and his team for producing a first-class Athletics Carnival. Well done everyone.

We tried something different this term which was to invite Year 12 parents and students to an evening specifically targeted to their needs. And what a huge success it was. The success of these evenings largely depends on the number of parents and students willing to leave the comfort of the home and venture out for the evening. Based on the large number of willing parents and students that turned up for a 6.45pm start, the evening was clearly going to be successful. Add to this the wonderful food prepared and served by our VET Hospitality students, success was further guaranteed. We structured the evening to be short, sharp and active with lots of take away messages and knowledge for both parents and students. We shared ideas on the tips and tricks of navigating Year 12 from both the student and parents’ perspective. The messages of how to navigate anxiety and promote healthy mental health by identifying life’s challenges as waves or storms and knowing how they can be managed. Parents and students also had the opportunity to attend workshops lead by our expert teachers on:

  • TAFE, Work, or University?
  • VCAL – what are these things called competencies?
  • ATAR – what is it and does really matter?
  • VCE examiners – meet the people who mark the VCE examination papers.

There was great energy in the Frances building as parents and students moved into the workshops and stayed on at the end for the informal chats, questions and reconnections with other parents and staff. This was a wonderful evening and has given us the opportunity to reinforce our collective efficacy as parents and as a school in supporting our Year 12 students to be confident in their ability to successfully flourish in this their final year of secondary schooling.

My sincere thanks to Ms Valencia and her amazing VET Hospitality class and to Ms Richards, Ms Keane, Ms Cardamone, Mr Mitchell, Mrs Ramnuth, Mrs Stewart, Mr Couty and Ms Roberts for their outstanding contribution to the evening.

And thank you to all the parents and students who came, this was for you and about you and we needed you in order to make this evening a success and a success it truly was.

I wish you all a safe and productive week.
