Construction Immersion Update

Completing the dividing timber fence on Moola Road

Below is a summary of the day construction students, Jackson Key (Year 11)

The day started with a toolbox meeting. We discussed the objectives for the days and completed risk assessments on the power tools we had planned to use. Following the meeting, we tied down all the timber posts and rails to the ute and attached the trailer. We had two sections of fence to complete.

We set about cutting the timber rails using 100mm x 38mm timber to size using a circular saw, attaching them to the post using 75mm galvanised baton screws. The timber pickets were then nailed to the rails using 50mm galvanised clouts. We used one of the pickets on its side as a spacer to keep consistency in our spacing.

After nailing the pickets to the rails, we flicked a chalk line across the fence to allow us to trim the tops to the correct height. We all had a go of using the circular saw to trim the top of the fence to 150mm above the top rail.

Today we had a visit from an MCA Old Boy Joshua Loft 2010, Josh had come through the Construction Immersion program and now has his own successful construction company BOAB Building Group. He spoke to us about his time here and his journey starting out as an apprentice right through to owning his own construction company. He also spoke to us about employability skills and highlighted the traits he looks for as a boss when looking for a good employee and apprentices.

At the end of the day, we tidied the site and packed up all our equipment into the trailer and tied off materials on the ute.
