Year 9/10 Intermediate Boys AFL SSV District

On Thursday 28 April, twenty-three very enthusiastic Year 9/10 boys took the field against Koonung SC at Elgar Park in the SSV District AFL Championship. The first 2 quarters were an arm wrestle between two very evenly matched teams with the lead changing countless times. The 3rd quarter in AFL is often called the “premiership quarter” and BHS turned the game on its head with 5 goals to 3 including 3 consecutive goals in a 3-minute burst. BHS then controlled the game in the last quarter enjoying more freedom and free flowing football adding a further 7 goals in the last quarter to kick away and comprehensively win by 45 points.

All 23 players made valuable contributions whether that be in the back line, midfield, or forward line. Mason Porter, Alex Bell, and Ethan Jesse were outstanding in the midfield engine room covering kilometres and accumulating possession after possession. Ryan O’Sullivan, Oskar Te Rure, Jack Maio and Finn Castor provided dangerous marking targets up forward. Gabe Roso, Sebastian Poynter and Drew Aiono were tireless with their defensive pressure and tackling in the back half. Ethan as Captain, Oskar (Vice Captain) and Ned Jones also displayed great leadership as senior players.

We are very proud of the way the boys went about the entire day. From the professional warm-up to after the final siren sounded, they represented BHS with pride, behaved superbly, performed at a high standard on the field and displayed great sportsmanship. The win means BHS will progress through to the Division round later this term. Bring it on!

Senior Soccer Whitehorse Division

On Friday 6 May BHS played in the Senior Soccer Whitehorse division at Terrara Park. Each school played 3 games that consisted of 2 x 20 minute halves. BHS played superbly in the first 2 rounds defeating Box Hill HS and Koonung. The core defensive unit of Leroy Jones (goalkeeper), Joel Carter and Luke Casey were impenetrable and turned defense into attack. Irah Murphy, Daniel Newnham, Will Nguyen, Bailey Brito-Babapulle and Baljaan Madan covered kilometres in the midfield, won the ball and created countless scoring opportunities for themselves and set up the fast and powerful striking of Max Nattrass. Stephen Burton, Ryan Cops and Tristan Vigneswaran also made valuable contributions on the pitch. Unfortunately, in the final round BHS ran out of steam and manpower and lost to the best team on the day East Doncaster SC. Despite being 4-0 down after the first half, BHS continued to work tirelessly and were rewarded with 2 second half goals.

We are very proud of the way BHS went about the entire day: work rate, skill, attitude, teamwork, and sportsmanship were all on full display. Well done BHS. A special thank you to Mr Chris Ondaatje who provided his soccer coaching expertise and passion.

Intermediate  AFL Girls

Congratulations to the intermediate girls AFL team that won the Whitehorse division competition on Tuesday 17th May. Students showed great leadership and growth across the day. With the first game being a draw and BHS winning the second game by 30 points, the final result was left to who won game 2 by the most amount of points.

Special mention to both Cheryl and Imogen in the ruck, who were supported by the gutsy mid fielders clearing the ball into the forward line. A number of goals scored in the second game and only one goal slipped through the wall of defence that was BHS’ backline.

Goal Scorers: Lucy Freeman (3), Jessica Callandar (1), Imogen Firth (1) and Trixie Kneebone (1).

We cannot wait to see what they bring to the field in the Eastern Metro Competition later in the year.
