On Thursday 19 May, Blackburn High School’s Languages faculty launched its inaugural Languages Day at the school. Students began the day in Mentor Groups completing a Language Body Profile activity that demonstrated the diversity of their linguistic and cultural backgrounds.
Kellie and Katrien from Les crêpes de Marion joined us for the day, selling delicious crêpes to staff and students, who were encouraged to order in French!
At lunch, BHS was treated to a cultural lunch, with the German staff organising a wonderfully themed Bratwurst BBQ along with savory and sweet pretzels!
There were plenty of decorations and the atmosphere was jovial thanks to the entertainment provided by the German band Schwarzwald. Students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and danced to the music throughout lunchtime!
In period 4, Year 8 students were invited to an afternoon incursion.
German students were treated to an engaging performance by the wonderfully talented Schwarzwald band once again. Student volunteers were called upon to try traditional German dances and even a few props.
French students had the opportunity to watch a fantastic bilingual puppet play on Cendrillon (Cinderella) and interact with the performance.
The Languages staff at BHS would like to acknowledge the Association of French Teachers in Victoria for their very generous contribution through the Student Activities Subsidy which made the performance possible.
I would like to extend my thanks to the entire Languages department, as well as all of the other teachers and staff who were able to support this event.
We hope that the BHS school community enjoyed the day and we look forward to make Languages Day a new annual tradition.
