Year 4/5/6 Winter Sport

Dear Parents

After a couple of years of very interrupted interschool sport for our senior students we are looking forward to getting back into our regular weekly sports. Every year the Eltham District Primary School Sports Association (EDPSSA) conducts a weekly sporting exchange. There are 7 school that form the Eltham District. Eltham Nth PS, Eltham East PS, Eltham PS, Research PS, Eltham College, St. Thomas Nth Greensborough and of course us.

As a District we conduct a number of senior school events including the District Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics. As well as these we also have a Weekly Winter Sports in 2nd term, consisting of Football, Soccer, Netball, Korfball and Bat Tennis. In the district we have 2 smaller schools, which use students from years 4 to 6 while the 4 bigger schools use mostly grade 6 only. As a result, our students get 3 years of participation in this while in many schools they only get 1 year. At times we can also include year 3’s!  The 3 smaller schools also drop 1 sport, which for us is soccer. As there are seven schools we get a six game season with a couple of weeks for practice and a week for a bye because of the uneven number of schools.

In 3rd term the district runs the Summer sports of Basketball, Volleyball, Rounders, Softball and Finska. I’ll give you more information about these later this term. As always the main aims of Primary School Sport are to give the students an experience of participating in a team environment, meeting and mixing students from the local community and developing important social skills. The Eltham District events are also a stepping stone toward School Sport Victoria’s State Championships. In many of the events, if teams or individuals are successful they progress, through the SSV levels of Division, Regional and State competitions.

The weekly competition has some impact on the rest of the school. The basic information is -

  • Matches begin at 1.00pm
  • For away matches in term 2, buses leave at 12.35pm, (seniors will eat lunch at 12.10.)
