What's Happening

in RE Classrooms?

Term 1 Week 11 2022

This week junior Religious Education classes have been learning about Holy Week. Below is an overview from a variety of Year 8 Religious Education classes:

Palm Sunday:

As part of our Annual Improvement Plan, students have been using the Reciprocal Reading strategies to help them read and decode Scriptural texts. Students read the Palm Sunday story from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke, annotating the text to make connections to prior knowledge, to make predictions, to question, to clarify understanding and to summarise the text. Students demonstrated their understanding of the text by summarising the key ideas and adding them to a Palm Leaf.

Maundy Thursday: The Last Supper

Students then looked at Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the Last Supper, locating each disciple and annotating their copy of the image before reading Matthew 26:17-30 and comparing both accounts of the same event. Students demonstrated their understanding through the completion of a Focus Question: If the painting was an actual photo of the Last Supper, highlight which moment in the passage you believe the event took place.

Students have also been learning about the significance of Prayer and applying this understanding to Holy Week. Students were asked to choose a prayer that resonated with them in relation to Good Friday and reflect upon it. Below are some samples of this great work:

Finally, students have been completing regular check-ins to help them track their progress on the Lenten goals they set on Ash Wednesday.
