Kitchen and Garden & Sustainability News

Kitchen

Reflecting back on the end of Term 4 we wanted to say the biggest congratulations to all Grade 6 students for their outstanding creations in MasterChef.  We were blow away by their team work, efficiency, kitchen skills and creativity.  Four years in the Surfside kitchen has equipped these students with some amazing skills and we saw it all come together in all its colours in this event.  Well done Grade 6 students, you're amazing!

A big thank you to all our judges that came along to our MasterChef Autumn Harvest picnic feast.

Our Grade 4 students have jumped back into the kitchen and started Term 2 off with an amazing cook up.  Focusing on knife skills today and herb identification, the students were right on top of it and ready to cook.  They did a wonderful job at baking up some spinach and ricotta rolls, savory muffins, white bean dip and pita bread, a garden salad and an upside-down apple cake to top it all off!

Garden

Autumn is upon us and it is now time to plant our brassicas, broad beans, peas, garlic, beetroot, carrots, radish & onions. Our leafy greens are flourishing with lettuce, coriander, kale & silverbeet. The loquat tree is flowering profusely so fingers crossed we get a delicious crop of fruit.

Over the holidays we had a wonderful crew of volunteers who came in daily to water the students seedlings and freshly planted crops and we held a mini working bee to tidy up, plant and add compost to the beds. The garden looked super happy when we all came back from holidays after all the tender love and care.

A massive thank you to Spence & Pip, Fiona, Flynn & Maeve, Georgie & Leo, Sabrina, Riley & Morgan, Allison & Charli, Dana, Alessia & Valentina, Melinda & Willow, Kirsten & Mac and Natalie. Without your valuable service, the garden wouldn't look so good. She thanks you!!

DONATION OF COMPOST!!!!

Brendan Bolton came back to the garden to visit on our working bee. He bought along a generous donation of deliciously dark compost that our veggies are already loving. Many of you may remember Brendan from when he was the Garden Specialist at Surfside, well now a days you can find Brendan working in the Garden Organics Business Development & Education, and Environment and Waste departments at City of Greater Geelong. COGG uses all of our garden green waste and turns it into wonderful compost that you can order & purchase from Wallington Rural. Pop into the garden next week and have a look at how we have put it to good use!

Volunteers

We need your help! The kitchen and garden is a really fun place to spend an hour or 2 and we would love you to come and help out the students.

Every Wednesday the kitchen and garden comes alive and the students thrive cooking and playing in the garden, however they need your help! If you have a special skill to share or simply want to come and get your hands dirty then please get in contact with Clancey or Fleur. Your help is extremely valuable and we need more wonderful people to come along to our sessions:

Clancey for garden classes – clancey.mckenzie2@education.vic.gov.au

Fleur for kitchen classes - fleur.kilpatrick@education.vic.gov.au

Don't despair if you are not free on a Wednesday!! Please get in touch with us as there are so many opportunities to make a difference. There are lots of things you can do.

*Volunteers require a working with children check, a my gov certificate to show double vaccination status and will need to do a brief induction at the office prior to volunteering.

Please find attached the Kitchen Garden Program timetable.
