Sport News

Mr Luke Caplick

Last weekend marked the end of our 2021 sporting season with both AIC Invitational Touch Football and Water Polo games taking place on Saturday and Sunday. It was great to see our eight touch football teams compete at SLC Playing Fields in a tournament structured to espouse participation and enjoyment in a sport in which the boys haven’t had the opportunity to represent the College before. I would like to pay particular gratitude to our staff and parent volunteers who made this experience possible; James Furminger, John Lambourne, Liam Beatty, Tim Sedgwick, Bruce McPhee, Ben Webb, Kathryn Badini, Sam Priddis, Melissa Orcher and Simon Price, along with parents Mai Peregrina and Brett Head. We are lucky to have staff and parents of this calibre volunteer their time after such a busy year of sport, knowing the boy’s participation was dependent on their involvement. Our inexperience was evident at the start of the day but the improvement across the course of the tournament was evident as most teams progressed to the semi-final stages. Well done to our primary and Year 8-9 team who made the grand final in their respective divisions.

On Sunday, Mr Apps took our Water Polo teams along to compete in the AIC Water Polo Competition. Well done to our Year 7 and 8-9 teams who remained undefeated throughout the day. Our Open team wasn’t as successful but from all reports enjoyed the day.

The MCA Sports Department is currently seeking coaches, trainers, managers and officials for the Year 5-12 AIC sports program in 2022.

Next year we are opening up managers and trainers’ positions to students who may not be able to participate in playing but would like to have a connection with a team in any sport. If this is of interest to you please complete the attached form with your details. Please note these are not paid positions.

Additionally, we require the assistance of staff, parents, Old Boys and friends of the College to take on the many duties needed to ensure that every student can participate and enjoy all the benefits that playing sport provides as well as ensuring the ongoing growth and development of our sports program across all areas.

Marist College Ashgrove’s success in sport is dependent upon many factors, one being the generosity of members within our community to give of their time and efforts to serve our students by taking on specific roles. These roles include; coach, manager, referee, umpire, scorer etc. If you can help in any way, could you please complete the nomination form via the link below as soon as possible.

All forms received will be compiled into a database. Before each season commences a member of the Sports Office will contact those who have expressed an interest to assist. A final confirmation of commitment will be asked, and further details will be given.

I thank all those who were able to assist throughout 2021 and I invite those who would like to assist in 2022 to become involved for the benefit of our students and the College.

Swimming

It is that time of the year when the annual AIC Swimming Mango Drive kicks off. Well really, we are late kicking off this year due to some unforeseen technical glitches which means we have only ONE WEEK, yes, just ONE WEEK to get our orders in. Orders close on Friday 29 October at 4:00pm.

Please find attached the flyer which explains the details, including how to order. The Mango Drive will be slightly different this year as there has been, unfortunately, a 60% - 70% crop fail due to an unusually warm winter, and this heavenly fruit will be in short supply, so the usual 7kg trays will be reduced to 4.5kg. The price has dropped accordingly. The taste and quality, however, will still be the same.

For our new families, the Annual Mango Drive, which has been running at MCA for over 10 years, raises money for the AIC Swimming Program. It has become an institution and is eagerly looked forward to by the whole Marist community:

  • You order and pay for your trays online, through the Tuckshop Monitor System – either on your phone using the College App or on your computer through the Parent Portal (click on the blue hamburger tile). If your son has not yet started at Marist, you can still create an account on the Tuckshop Monitor System, using the link in the flyer.
  • The mangoes will arrive at the pool by the last week of Term 4
  • You will receive an email to say they have arrived and you will come to the pool to collect your order

One of our Year 11 mums, Louise Salter, has kindly offered to organise the Mango Drive this year. Her contact details are on the flyer should you have any queries.
