WHAT'S HAPPENING @ SCSC?

YEAR 8 - Chemistry Unit, Sweet Science

STRIVE: As part of the chemistry unit students have been learning about chemical reactions and solutions. Students were given the task to follow a method to produce candy crystals caused by over saturating a solution of water and sugar.  This forced the solution to form solid clumps and climb up a paddlepop stick.

Year 11 Designing Jumpers for 2022

UNITE: Year 11 students have been creating some designs for the Year 12 Jumpers next year, students will vote on their preferred design with local company Indigo Wolfe tasked with making the jumpers.

Year 12 - Term 3 End of Term

At the end of last term, we held a barbeque celebration for our Year 12s so they could have a get together before putting their heads down to study.  An exam pack of goodies was also handed out to our students prior to the break.

Term 4 New Staff Introductions

We warmly welcome more new staff to the Surf Coast Secondary College family!

~ Mel White

Mel is starting with us as the School Health Promotion Nurse (SHPN) and aims to support the health and wellbeing of our secondary school students, with a focus on health promotion and primary prevention to improve student health, wellbeing and learning outcomes.  SHPN's play a key role in reducing negative health outcomes and risk-taking behaviours among young people, including drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco smoking, eating disorders, obesity, depression, suicide and injuries.

Mel will be working collaboratively with students, teachers, wellbeing staff, school leadership and our school community to help build capability and improve health outcomes.

"For the past 13 years I have worked in many schools in the Geelong and Wyndham regions.  I have also worked as a Midwife and Maternal Child Health Nurse and enjoyed some time in Queensland as part of the Aeromedical Retrieval Team.

I am a mum, a wife, and a lover of my 2 dogs Ruby and Pearl.
I am passionate and enthusiastic about working and supporting the school community, with a drive to address contemporary health and social issues facing young people and their families.
I look forward to meeting the students over the coming weeks and supporting them with their transition back to school."

~ Amy Merriman

Amy is joining us here at SCSC as our new Head Start Coordinator.

"As Head Start Coordinator, I am a resource and support for teachers, providing pathways for student looking at School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships.  I liaise with industry to provide suitable placement and work experience opportunities before an SBAT is offered.   Once a student is in a SBAT I then continue to support both students and employers throughout the apprenticeship or traineeship."

"Prior to this position,  I had been with Head Start as the Administration Manager for the past year so understand what a great program it is and how it can make a real difference in a student’s pathway.   Prior to working for the Department of Education I was an Account Manager for a digital media company.

SCSC has always been a fantastic supporter of the Head Start Program.  I had the opportunity to produce some marketing videos using Luci Reuben and Erin Wright as talent and the overwhelming message was SCSC will support any program that gives opportunities to its community.  I am really looking forward to being a part of the team that can shape a pathway for students.  If I can help a student and their family, that might be a little lost, lacking motivation, overwhelmed about what is happening in world at present or just needing a hand to coordinate opportunities beyond school this will be extremely rewarding."

~ Kellie Edwards

Kellie will be joining our Administration team, as we'd thought two Kelly's in the Administration team was not enough!  Kellie's role will focus on attendance and careers administration.

"Prior to this position, I worked in the Administration team at Concord School, a Prep to 12 school supporting students with additional needs.

What I am most looking forward to in regards to working at SCSC is getting to know the staff, students and community members at SCSC and seeing how I can make a positive difference in their lives."

~ Mark Dooley

Mark will be teaching English and Humanities for Year 7 and Year 11 this term at SCSC.

"Prior to teaching, my first ever job was in a bank but it really was just a gap year for me.  I always knew I wanted to be a teacher.

I'm most looking forward to working together with my colleagues at SCSC to inspire students to become the best possible version of themselves."
