Meet new International Student Coordinator

Meet our new International Student Coordinator – Kirsten Maruff

Tell us why you accepted the role of International Student Coordinator at Kilvington.

I’m absolutely thrilled to be taking on the position of International Student Coordinator at Kilvington. It’s an incredible opportunity for me to connect with students from all over the world, exchange thoughts and perspectives, explore and understand diverse cultures, and offer my support on academic, social and cultural matters.

I am passionate about international education, and I’m dedicated to helping students thrive in a new environment.

Have you held a similar position to this before, or is this the first time for you?

Previous experience I bring to this role includes a live-in position as the Head of a Boarding House, where I had the privilege of working closely with a diverse group of students who were experiencing life in Australia for the very first time.

In addition to this, I've also served as a Year Level Coordinator where I placed a strong emphasis on providing pastoral care to my students. I found that building meaningful relationships with them was key to creating a supportive and safe learning environment.

Furthermore, I've also had the opportunity to teach EAL (English as an Additional Language) classes to newly-arrived international students.

What do you think is the most important part of the role you do?

For international students at Kilvington, it may be their first time living away from home or visiting another country. They may feel nervous, so ensuring their safety and happiness is the most important part of my role.

How important is it for young people to spend time experiencing and learning in other cultures, and why?

It is so important for young people to spend time with other cultures. I could write about this all day! But in short, it broadens their perspective and helps them to become more open-minded and empathetic towards others.

In today’s globalised world, cultural competency is increasingly becoming an important skill. Spending time in diverse cultural environments gives young people firsthand experience with cultural norms and practices that are different to their own and, not to mention, personal growth, career opportunities and language learning!

What are the most challenging aspects of the role?

Kilvington is a hive of activity! Being part of this community means being on your toes at all times. As someone who helps international students navigate their many opportunities, I am constantly amazed by their energy and drive. It’s incredible to see them take advantage of everything Kilvington has to offer.

Even though it can be challenging to keep up, I’m grateful to be part of this exciting environment and witness these students making the most of their time here.

While new to the role, do you have a couple of memorable moments that confirmed that you made the right decision?

It was heartening to see a new international student joining the festivities of the recent House Swimming Carnival - cheering, competing in the races and having fun with friends. This experience served as a reminder that Kilvington excels in creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

What are the goals you hope to achieve by doing this role?

The overarching goal of my role is to ensure international students have a successful and positive experience at Kilvington. To achieve this goal, my focus includes a successful orientation and integration, academic support, being an advocate for students within the school community and ensuring that lines of communication are always open.

If you could live anywhere else other than Australia, where would it be and why?

I have lived in really varied places within Australia including the High Country, regional Victoria and Melbourne. If I could live anywhere else in the world, it would probably be somewhere in Southeast Asia. I love the warmer weather, the rich and diverse culture, the delicious food, and the opportunities for adventure!
