Year 10 - Work Experience Week

  • Term 2: JUNE 19th – 23rd
  • Term 3: SEPT 11th – 15th

Why do Work Experience………

  • Surf Coast Secondary College values Work Experience because it helps prepare students for the demands and expectations of the working world.
  • Work Experience helps students make more informed career decisions.
  • It enables students to start developing a range of employability skills.
  • Through work experience students can begin to build networks and engage with the community, sometimes leading to part time work as well as providing them with a reference as they build their resumes.
  • Students can use their experience in the workplace to reflect on their future pathway.
  • If you are a local business that would like to host a work experience student, please get in touch with us at Surf Coast Secondary College.

1 - Decide what work experience you would like to do!

2 - Find out where you can do that kind of work       experience.

  • Do some research to find employers related to the work experience you're interested in.
  • Search websites for that kind of job, and then try approaching the businesses that advertise those jobs. Ring and introduce yourself, ask if they will take you on for work experience.
  • You could also do online searches using keywords associated with the sort of work experience you want.

3 - Use your networks

  • Your family and friends, this includes people you know from your neighbourhood like sporting coaches or community leaders. It also includes people you know from your school, like teachers and career counsellors.
  • Asking people you already know for advice on places you can do work experience is a great way to use your network.
  • Your family probably has good connections with the local community. Ask them if they know a local business owner who can help.
  • Make a list of the names and contact details for the businesses and organisations you find out about.

4 - Applying for work experience

  • The careers team need the host employers business name and address, contact details of the owner or manager including their email and phone number.
  • Once we have received the above we can generate the paperwork.

5 - Don't give up

  • If you work through your list and you haven't found any work experience, don't give up. Come and visit us in the careers office, Deb and Holly are here to help you.
  • Try thinking about: Other jobs you might be interested in or other companies in areas you haven't looked at yet.

National Careers Week

A message from the National Careers Institute2023 National Careers Week Premier Partner

This National Careers Week, we invite you to join us for two free webinars, the first will focus on transitioning industries and the second will discuss skills on the move.

The National Careers Institute ensures everyone in Australia has access to reliable and accurate careers information and resources. The National Careers Institute is a proud partner of National Careers Week.

Resilience, creativity, dependability, and collaboration skills are important for career success. Often referred to as soft skills, these personality traits can be just as important as technical expertise when it comes to securing a job. With an ever-changing market, job seekers need to ensure that soft skills like flexibility and problem solving are at the forefront of their resume.

What do employers want?

Employers value soft skills. Did you know that 75% of employers consider soft skills to be just as important, if not more important than technical skills? Employers rely on soft skills to ensure a candidate is a good fit for the role, and for their business.

It’s much easier for employers to teach someone to use a machine than teaching reliability or good communications skills. To find out more about the Australian labour market, including the skills employers are looking for, visit Australian Jobs 2022 on the Your Career website.

Can you learn soft skills?

Even without formal training, there are many ways that you can grow and improve your soft skills. Simply being able to identify areas where you’d like to grow is a great start!

Did you know that job seekers who complete a soft skills course often submit more job applications, even into new industries, due to the confidence gained?

Don’t be discouraged if you’ve identified a soft skill that you need to work on. The great news is that there are numerous training courses available, designed to help you improve your capabilities.

Some people naturally possess a range of soft skills that they excel at. Others will hone them over time through work and life experience.

Other actions you could consider include:

  • asking for new opportunities at work, specific to your targeted soft skill, for example:
    • presenting in an important meeting will give you a chance to develop your public speaking skills.
    • leading a team project could help you develop both your leadership and teamwork soft skills.
  • volunteering in a community organisation, industry or occupation that interests you
  • joining a social group or sports team to learn to communicate in different settings
  • seeking feedback from your supervisor or manager, or a colleague who knows you well
  • self-reflecting after completing tasks to consider what went well, and where you personally could have improved.

Soft skills in action

The good thing about soft skills is that they are transferrable and can apply to all industries.

This National Careers Week, we invite you to join us for two informative half hour webinars:

‘Transitioning industries’ – Monday 15 May 2023, 2pm AEST.

Find out how industries in Australia are evolving in the 21st century.

Career Apocalypse

World Economic Forum (WEF) analysts predict that a staggering 83 million jobs will be nixed globally in the next five years as bank and postal clerks, cashiers, secretaries and other roles are pushed out by new technology. At the same time, 69 million jobs will be created in emerging industries, such as artificial intelligence (AI), sustainability, and robotics. Still, that's a net loss of 14 million jobs, or 2% of the current global workforce.
