Education Week ~ Sunday 14 to Saturday 20 May

FLOURISH:  The theme 'Active Learners' : Move, Make, Motivate celebrates the many ways students learn, through physical activity, hands on learning and student voice.

Education Week is an opportunity for our school to celebrate and share with you how we encourage our students to be active learners.

Surf Coast Secondary College is proud to encourage active learners both inside and outside the classroom, through a variety of programs and our dynamic curriculum.

We will be celebrating Education Week by highlighting the amazing activities here at SCSC that encompass Move, Make and Motivate.

You can see some wonderful examples of this below.

Year 10 Outdoor Education

FLOURISH: Our Year 10 Outdoor & Environmental students hiked the beautiful, iconic Wilsons Promontory over 5 days last week. The focus of the program was to develop students’ leadership, initiative and teamwork skills. Students revelled in the beauty and learnt about the indigenous fauna and flora of the area. Students stepped out of their comfort zones and found they could indeed succeed in the great outdoors.

A few notes from students –

"Finding out that I could walk over 15km with a pack on was really cool."

"The scenery was beautiful; you wouldn’t see this in Torquay."

"I got to know students that I wouldn’t normally talk to and we laughed a lot!
We saw many cool animals and sights."

Thanks to Alex Bramley & Abbey Speed for assisting their group with positive memories.

Year 11 BioLab Body Balance Sessions

STRIVE: Our Year 11 students went to Geelong Technical School to BioLab during the week. During the program, students performed tests to diagnose an elite athlete with hypothyroidism.  They first established a normal functioning negative feedback loop for temperature regulation and then determined what factors didn't work in the affected athlete.   Students then debated whether the treatment for the condition was performance enhancing.

Special Author Visit - Toni Jordan (Nine Days)

STRIVE: Our VCE English students were honoured to have author Toni Jordan visit the College last week to speak with our VCE English students.

Toni Jordan is a renowned author, and the writer of current VCE text 'Nine Days'.  Our VCE students had a rewarding experience discussing the writing process and decisions behind her choices, that will no doubt help further their studies with this text.

We thank Toni for her time.

Inter School Football

UNITE:  On Tuesday the 16th, some of our SCSC students represented our college in Inter School girls & boys football.  They played two games, played really well as a team and fought really hard for the whole day.  Although we didn't make the finals, we're super proud of  of the great effort by all.

Women's Shed Potted Tea Cups

FLOURISH: The students in our Women's Shed made tea cup bird feeders and succulents during the week.  A great creative way to recycle those old cups in your cupboards!

Voc. Major Coffee Van ~ Sharing the Knowledge

UNITE: This week we had our amazing Year 12 Vocational Major students training our Year 11 students on how to make coffees and run the coffee van.  The Year 12 students showed amazing leadership skills, explained processes clearly and gave great demonstration and instructions.  The Year 11’s did a great job learning latte art, how to steam milk and make all the hot drinks.

Civil Construction Taster

STRIVE: These are some photos from the Civil Construction taster excursion, where year 10 - 12 students learnt about Civil Construction pathways and opportunities.  Students had a tour of the big Railway construction worksite in South Geelong and the employment opportunities.  They also learnt how to operate an excavator and bobcat and got to test drive some of the equipment at the Multiskills training facility.  It was a great (muddy) day out!

Vocational Major Community Connections

RESPECT: Community Connections is a key part of our Vocational Major program at Surf Coast, enabling students the opportunity to engage with various organisations and activities outside of the school setting.

So far this year, students have involved themselves in various clean-up Australia Day initiatives along the Surf Coast, including coastal and dune care protection programs.  We have also established an ongoing partnership with the Torquay Community House and senior residents in our community.  This program focuses on fostering relationships and finding intergenerational connections between participants.

New participants are welcome in this program that runs fortnightly, Friday mornings at the Torquay Community House. If you would like more information please email Thomas.dunn@education.vic.gov.au.

Girl In Charge

UNITE: What a wonderful write-up by the Surf Coast Times regarding the Victorian Police-run initiative 'Girl In Charge' program. This program promotes self-image, leadership, gratitude and resilience.
