Pro-Social Skills Seminar
Year 7 students participated in the Pro-Social Skills Seminar on Thursday 25 May.
The seminar was led by the Year 10 Peer Support Leaders. As role models selected from within the school community, the Peer Support Leaders are well placed to convey authoritatively and address the most pertinent issues for elaboration, focus and discussion. The Peer Support Leaders developed the content to be delivered to their groups, presented the content and ran a range of team-building and reflective activities and discussions on the content delivered.
The Pro-Social Skills Seminar aimed to support students to:
- Identify the indicators of respectful and disrespectful relationships
- Develop traits appropriate to the formation and continuation of rewarding relationships
- Resolve conflict respectfully in a range of situations
- Cultivate resilience and adaptability and
- Value diversity in community and act in inclusive ways.
Pro-social behaviours help children interact with others in ways that demonstrate respect and compassion. These behaviours are skills which can be taught and practised over time. Developing pro-social skills requires students to reflect on their behaviour and understand the features of good, respectful relationships. By learning about respectful relationships, children can resolve conflict, should it arise, and adopt appropriate roles to support individuals and promote group cohesion. They can foster personal traits such as kindness and generosity and learn about inclusive behaviours which support their development through adolescence.
