Afternoon At The Museum

Year 7 students hosted the ‘Afternoon at the Museum’ event on Friday 19 May. Working in groups of up to four, students conducted thorough research on a selected ancient civilisation or major world religion. Students were required to investigate the influence of geography, notable leaders, key ideas and cultural features and to consider the contemporary importance or enduring legacy of the selected topic.

All girls worked hard over the course of some weeks to research, prepare and then present an informative and visually appealing museum display incorporating a range of items curated to provide information on their selected civilisation or religion.

These displays were then presented at the ‘Afternoon at the Museum’ event on Friday afternoon. The event was a great success! There were games and raffles, and curious students interested in the topics displayed. Students from Grades 5 and 6 visited the displays, and so did many parents of the Year 7 students. There were visits from staff as well as older students who came to learn and share in the enjoyable atmosphere, reminiscing about their own event when they were younger students! It was delightful to see each student get into the spirit of the afternoon - talking with others, sharing their understanding, and showing an enthusiasm for the study of History.

What was most pleasing was the way the girls visited other groups and were supportive of the efforts of all.

The displays were assessed by a guest judge for the quality of the information presented and the visual appeal of the display. Congratulations to the group who researched the Han Dynasty of China for their winning presentation! Special mentions were made of the group who researched Hinduism and the Cycladic Greece group.
