Careers Week

Today the Year 9 students enjoyed the opportunity to hear from a panel of women discussing growth industries and VET pathways. The session, which was delivered as part of the Year 9 Pillars program, was informative and well received by the students, evident by the many questions asked of the panel.

This Friday 19 May, the Year 9 to 12 students will attend the Southern Catholic College Careers Showcase, taking place at MAC 02 from 9.00am to 6.00pm. The Year 11 and 12 students will visit the expo in Periods 1 and 2, the Year 10s after recess in Periods 3 and 4, and the Year 9s after lunch during Periods 5 and 6.

The Showcase webpage is now live and includes a full list of the exhibitors, as well as an exhibitors' map and passport to help students to plan their visit.

Most exciting is the inclusion of two exhibitors bringing emerging and interactive technologies to the event:

A wide range of industries representing all key sectors will be present, including the following:

  • Civil construction – with the civil construction industry needing to fill 7,000 positions in the next three years, Headlam Howlett & William Adams-CAT are rolling in their excavators for display.
  • Defence – used for tactical training, disaster relief and security of Australia’s coastline, Defence will have the Army G Wagon on display.
  • Emergency services – Tasmania PoliceAmbulance Tasmania and Tasmania Fire Service will be displaying their vehicles and current equipment.
  • Education – University of Tasmania and TasTafe will provide interactive displays, including drones.
  • Sustainable Timber Tasmania – with responsibilities including fire management, STT will bring along their fire truck.
  • Health – Allied Health (physio, speech, occupational therapy), Mental Health, General Nursing, Radiation Therapy and Oral Health.

Furthermore, new exhibitors attending include INCATBlueline LaundryCSIROPar Avion, Shadforth Financial Group and Study in the USA – just to name a few!

It is certainly going to be a comprehensive Showcase. It is expected that more than 2,000 students from Catholic Colleges across southern Tasmania will be in attendance.

With recent research highlighting that parents are the key influencer in their child's career pathway decisions, parents are also warmly invited to attend the Showcase between 3.00pm and 6.00pm along with staff and students (outside Years 9 to 12).

Live Life Whole

Last week the Year 7 and 8 students participated in a Live Life Whole workshop as part of the PILLARS. Essentially, the program is designed to provide students with the tools and life skills that will support them to thrive physically, mentally and emotionally now and throughout life.

The students worked through a series of modules, with Year 8 teachers now planning to build upon the understandings and strategies in the coming weeks. Areas to be covered include:

  • Nutrition, gut and skin health
  • Sleep and hydration
  • Movement
  • Female health, hormones and menstrual cycle
  • Stress and safety
  • Gratitude, mindfulness and breathwork
  • Relationships and identity
  • Thoughts and emotions
  • Body image
  • Self-worth and compassion
  • Values, boundaries and purpose

Presentation House Week

Next week the College looks forward to celebrating Presentation Week. Junior and Senior House Leaders of Presentation are working hard to offer a range of activities in support of their charity, the Nagle Foundation. It is only fitting, therefore, that I conclude with the beautiful prayer of this proud House:

Loving God,
We recognise in Nano Nagle a strength which comes from you. This enabled her, in the face of disappointment regarding her dreams, to take up her lantern and set out each day to bring comfort to those who had very little light in their lives.
We pray that we will be strengthened by her example and bring a little light into the lives of those we see every day especially those who may feel lonely or ignored.
Amen
