Tech Talk: Staying Safe Online

Brendan Deith - Head of Innovations

“It’s tough being a parent today, and much of this has to do with technology.”Daniel Sih

Have you had ‘the chat’ with your children yet? You know, the chat about being safe online?

This past week has seen our DCC parents and students attend Cyber Safety presentations from ThinkUKnow.org.au and already, bold conversations have taken place.

I recently read an excellent book titled ‘Raising Tech Healthy Humans’ by Christian author Daniel Sih. His #1 tip for families around keeping your children safe online is conversation. Sitting down over a meal and having a discussion about how your family interacts with the online world. Such a simple concept, but proven by research to be highly effective. Daniel’s book is an excellent read and I highly recommend it.

Wherever your family is at with online safety conversations, our prayer is that the relationships with your children strengthen and that a two-way trust develops.

Why not try some of these conversation starters at your next meal together?

  • What do you like doing online?
  • What things make you feel unsafe online?
  • How can you help your friends to stay safe online?
  • What is your online username/what would it be?
  • What makes for a good username?

Lest We Forget

Harry Foster - Year 6 Team Leader

Across the past two weeks, as part of our inquiry unit on Australia’s history, the Year 6 students have been on an excursion to the Immigration Museum and The Shrine of Remembrance.

The students had a self-guided tour at the Immigration Museum, exploring the reasons why people migrate, including the push and pull factors. The students learnt about the different Australian Immigration policies and found out that Australia has not always been the multicultural nation that we celebrate now.

At the Shrine, the students went on a tour, learning about Australia’s involvement in a number of wars and how they have shaped Australia’s story.  We ended the tour with a moment of silence to reflect on the incredible sacrifice of many who lost their lives fighting for Australia.

There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends, as our Lord and Saviour did for us.

Lest we forget.

Melbourne City Is Calling!

Danielle Lupi - Year 5 Team Leader

Last Tuesday, the Year 5s descended upon the sunny streets of Melbourne city. As part of our Inquiry unit, ‘Changing Australia’, the students travelled along Birrarung Marr Park, including the Yarra River route, which the European explorers travelled.

Each student grew in their understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and the heroic spirit of our early explorers.
