From the Principal

We would like to acknowledge the original custodians of this land and waterways

and pay our respects to the Elders past and present and emerging,

for they hold the memories, the traditions, the culture and hopes of Indigenous Australia.

St Anthony's Feast Day

On Tuesday 13th June St Anthony's staff and students will celebrate the feast day with a number of different activities.  We will firstly attend the 9.15am Mass to give honour to our Patron Saint, St Anthony of Padua.  In the lead up to this day each class will look at the aspects of St Anthony's life.  His life displayed the charisma and practices that made him a saint, held in high esteem in our lives today.

The students will take part in activities with Kaboom Kids Sports, a shared lunch and then a number of activities in class.

All families are invited to this Mass on Tuesday and also the Parish Mass on Sunday 11th June at 11.00am where we honour St Anthony together as a parish.

South Central Principal Conference  - Darwin

I recently attended the South Central Principals' network conference in Darwin with 15 School Principals from neighboring schools.  The focus of the conference was to further deepen our knowledge and understanding about indigenous perspectives.

There were numerous opportunities for us to share experiences that made a difference in our lives: meeting with Graeme, an Indigenous Elder, who gave a brief insight into the family structure and traditions and practices  for his people; travelling to Kakadu National Park to view the rock art gallery at Ubirr, where we were able to see paintings of  animals, practices and paintings of early contact with European peoples. Some of the work was dated as 40,000 years old.

We were welcomed at the Darwin Catholic Education Office where we participated in a cultural immersion program at the Bishop Collins Centre. We were reminded of the authenticity of the Indigenous heritage and the impact that white settlers had on the land.

We also travelled to the Bathurst Island by ferry where we participated in a cultural program and visited the oldest Catholic Church on the Island that survived both the Darwin bombing in WW2 and Cyclone Tracey.

The experience was eye opening for us as leaders in Catholic schools and we are excited to start to plan for an immersion into a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives across our schools.  I will share more information as this unfolds.

Student Special Achievements

Cross Country

Well done to Rocco, Yiani and Poppy who qualified to represent our school at the Beachside District for Cross Country.  Unfortunately, Poppy was unable to attend on the day but I'm sure she was there in spirit supporting her peers.  All our Year 3 to 6 students who took part in the initial event must be congratulated on their participation and effort on behalf of our school.

Chess Tournament

Congratulations to our proud Chess Team who came third in the Interschool Chess Tournament and  to Neev who achieved second place amongst all the students that competed last Friday.

Parent-Teacher Interviews 21 & 22 June 2022

Parent teacher interviews are part of the Government requirement for reporting on students' progress during the year.  This is an opportunity for parents to meet with their child's teacher to discuss and celebrate the learning that has been achieved during Semester One.  You would have received and email yesterday with the details so that you can select a time to discuss your child's report which will be available both in person and online.  The times are Wednesday 21st June from 2.30 - 8.00pm and Thursday 22nd June from 3.30 - 6.00pm.

Memory Lane

Last week we were honoured to have a past student come and visit our school so that she could see the changes made since se left. Elsinore who was born on 6 July 1936, had a tour of the school and so impressed with seeing the many changes that had been made since she left in 1948.  She was accompanied by her daughter, Michelle and her carer, Pauline.

Sick Students

We have had a large number of sick students recently. Please keep your child at home if they are unwell.  It is important to note that children struggle to learn effectively when ill or on medication.  Keeping unwell children at home also reduces the spread of illness to other children and teachers.  If your child has been vomiting, they should be kept home for at least 24 hours after the vomiting has ceased. Children with an elevated temperature or taking medication to reduce their temperature should also be kept at home until they no longer require medication.

If your child is going to be absent from school or late please contact the school via phone or email by 9.00am. If you email your child's teacher please copy the email to the office office@santglen.catholic.edu.au

Please contact the office if you require more RATS.

Yours sincerely

Margaret Carlei

Principal
