Maths - Game on!

Number Fluency Task

From Foundation to Year 6, we begin Maths with a Number Fluency Task.

What is a Number Fluency Task (NFT)?

It is a short task or game that allows every student to be continuously engaged in the development of counting skills or an aspect of mental computation (for example: addition facts) to improve their fluency, recall or speed. The task is 'number’ based and the same throughout the week, which develops concepts that have been previously taught. Over the course of the week the activity is adapted to suit individual needs.

These are often games and tasks that can be played at home, and we will be sharing some of these in the newsletter throughout the term. You can also ask your child to share with you what their NFT is this week.

A game we have recently been playing in Year 1/2 is called Pirate Pete

Pirate Pete

Materials:

  • Playing cards with the picture cards removed
  • 3 players

In the group of 3, one player hands a card to each of the other players. They are not allowed to see their own card.

The two players with a card each hold the card on their forehead or place it over one eye, like a pirate. The player who dealt the cards can see both cards, but the two pirates can only see the other pirate's number.

The dealer adds the two cards together and the pirates must work out the number on their card based on the total and the other pirate's card. Swap over the roles in each round.

In Years 3 - 6, you can also play this game by multiplying the two cards.
