NO ADMITTANCE – Except on Party Business
Many of you may not know that I am a Tolkien fan. I have an annotated copy of The Hobbit, as well as The Lord of the Rings, which I escaped into when I was first introduced to Middle Earth as a teenager. A few years ago, I was lucky enough to travel to New Zealand where I hopped on a bus and headed to Hobbiton - the home of Bilbo, Frodo and Samwise Gamgee - which was left intact for those of us who wanted to spend some time in The Shire and experience a little movie magic. I have never been into souvenirs but this was one time where I couldn’t resist. So, for the rest of my journey around the two islands, I carefully carried a replica of the sign with me, until I found my way back home where it has sat in my lounge room ever since.
We continually talk to our students about making connections with what they read; be they personal connections (text to self), literary connections (text to text) or global connections (text to world). It’s funny, because now more than ever, these words have connected with me.
And that’s because even though the school is currently closed, I know once we are able to open again, Michele, will be ready to open the school gates and celebrate the return of our students and families to Oakleigh Primary School. And oh, how we will celebrate. Just like Bilbo’s party, I look forward to coming together as a school community. So for now, I have a new sign in my office to remind me of what awaits.
I hope EVERYBODY - students, parents, siblings, teachers and Principals have been finding a good book to read, EVERYDAY, which just happens to be the theme for this year’s PRC! Michele shared with me that last Wednesday, even with the rain, a number of families braved the weather for the first, open library hour, organised by our fabulous library technician, Anne. We will be continuing our open library hour each Wednesday from 1:30-2:30pm, with social distancing protocols in place.
Families can also access the school’s library catalogue on the internet at http://bookmark.central.sa.edu.au/oakleighps.htm to look for titles they may be interested in reserving. Reserved books can then be collected from the office when convenient. To reserve books please contact Anne via email at brew.anne.a@edumail.vic.gov.au . Happy reading everyone.
