Chookside News

Pretzel has gotten over her broody phase and is now back to her normal self, socialising with the other girls and coming out to say hi to the students whenever food is on offer. They are continuing to lay eggs for our muffin cooking sessions in weeks 9-10.

Garden News

The recent rain is fantastic for our silverbeet, snow peas, broccoli and cauliflower. Herbs is also in abundant, these have been providing us with lots of inspiration for our autumn recipes. We are so proud to announce the harvest of our very first kent pumpkin. The students have been busy learning about garden tools, how to identify them and their safe use to achieve their Garden Tool Licence.

Kitchen News

With pumpkin being in season, students made pumpkin, tomato and herbs, and a risotto of the imagination using all the good things we harvested form the garden. These were a hit because they were warm and hearty and flavoursome on cold days. See below for recipes. Students also reflected on knife skills and safety learnt throughout the semester in order to achieve their Knife Licence.

Happy growing, harvesting, preparing and sharing!

Students Reflection

In SAKG this term we have made many yummy nutritious meals. Some of the dishes were risotto, pesto pasta and a big variety of salads. Our supervisors Ms. Crossman, Rose and Kathy have done a fantastic job at helping us cook delicious meals. We have learnt the rules of knife safety, how to dice and use big knives.

We have been doing different garden task rotations in SAKG. When we see some plants we want to eat, we harvest or dig them out. If we see worms in the garden, we leave them there. Ms Crossman tells us they help improve the soil, which helps the plants to grow. When we dig, we sometimes remove the big plants that have finished growing to make room for the smaller plants to grow bigger. Watering is an important job because without water, the plants will die. We also feed the chickens our leftovers from the cooking sessions so we do not waste food.

Volunteers Needed!

Due to the timetable changes, we have lost some valuable volunteers. If you would like to help with either cooking or gardening sessions, please get in touch with Ms. Crossman or your child’s classroom teacher.
