Year 7 Camp 2019

What a great experience! On the 22nd – 24th of May, students went to Lake Dewar for camp. Students engaged in a range of fun activities, aiming to build relationships, resilience and overall to have fun!

“We had an absolute blast! There were many outdoor, adventure activities such as geocaching, mountain biking, push biking, canoeing, dual flying fox and survivor challenge. My highlight was definitely geocaching and eating marshmallows by the campfire. We also got to know our teachers on a different level and hang out with friends.”

Jazmine T, 7B

“Camp was much fun but very cold! The food was delicious!”

Damon, 7A

“The flying fox was awesome, I hung upside down! The gorge walk was also really fun but very challenging.”

Charlotte, 7A

"At Year 7 Camp we went on the flying fox. Ms Casha and Jayne went on it too. We went mountain biking and kick biking which were my favourite."

Kiara, 7D

This term we have gone on 2 excursions, 1 to CS square for our Health PBL to gather information about drugs in our community so we implement change. We’ve also gone to Lake Caroline where we collected water samples for our Science experiment.

At the moment we are studying the film Whale Rider in English which is actually a really good film, it explores themes such as culture, family and gender. In math we’ve been learning about measurement and probability. Teachers have been really supportive with our classwork and ILTs.

We have a few clubs on at the moment, there’s Gaming Club, K-Pop Club, Study Club, French Club, Art Club and Writer’s Club. This term Year 7s are pretty excited about Interschool Sport and the House Dodgeball competition.

National Reconciliation Week Mural

In Term 1 our Year 9's investigated indigenous history since colonisation. They learnt about the Stolen Generation, Black War, massacres and degradation of Indigenous culture.

In groups, students had to think of a way we could reconcile with indigenous peoples after these injustices. One group decided they wanted to show that Brookside is a place that welcomes Indigenous Australians and recognises the ongoing suffering caused by actions in the past.

Together they designed a mural, right down to writing a list of paints to order, materials to get, measurements and location of where they wanted to put it. We applied for a $500 grant for National Reconciliation Week which we won. We then contacted several Indigenous artists and finally got in contact with Fiona Clarke.

This last Wednesday the four students spent the day painting their mural in our front office foyer with Fiona Clarke and their art teacher, Mr Fenech. Fiona’s personal work is across the painting. We also invited the Indigenous students at our school to place their handprints on the mural.

The mural will stay in the front office for many years after our four Year 9's leave Brookside but its message will remain important. This mural has been created to show Brookside’s commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.

Next time you are at school, come by the front office foyer and have a look at what we created!

Well done to Fatemeh A, Loma F, Saad R, and Elyse P on their commitment to the project.
