Year 3 - Year 5

Assistant Principal's Report

Middle School News

The term break has reached us and with it, many accomplishments to be proud of.

Our student’s writing pieces are certainly proud worthy with the current writing displays highlighting strengths in the planning, drafting and publishing process.  The students in Years 3/4/5 are really benefiting from this whole school approach to teaching and learning.

If you haven’t already heard about Reading this year, please ask your child.  The approach to reading in 2019 includes a whole school ‘Readers Workshop’ model.  The increase in student engagement is easily measurable. At Pakenham Springs we want our students to do more than read and comprehend, we are excited about the thinking behind reading.  We want our students to make connections between texts, link their thoughts to the world and use background experiences to draw new conclusions.

The accomplishments, however, are not limited to the general classroom.  In specialist classes, the students in Years 3/4/5 have been engaging in some very proud worthy new learning.

In STEM, kaleidoscopes were researched, designed and brought to life over the weekly lesson. I had the pleasure of a surprise visit from Heidi and Jomel below, who were excited about explaining the purpose and progress that led them to successfully creating their very own Kaleidoscope.

You only need to visit the school’s podcast to hear the latest stories that have been created during our Media Arts specialist program.  Books have been brought to life with the junior classes, whilst the Year 3-6 students are learning media design techniques in animation, film and photography.  I am proud to say that Pakenham Springs Primary School is leading the way in teaching and learning in this area.   Below, we see Mr Rook supporting a team of excited students.

Stay tuned for the updates in Health and Physical Education (H/PE), Visual Arts and Japanese.  Our students really do have access to such a rich curriculum to be proud of.

Have a safe and happy holiday break, I am looking forward to more great things in Term 2.

Kindest Regards

Jane King
