Year Seven Excursion | The Kalgan Queen and Luke Pen Walk

On Tuesday all of the Year Sevens went on an excursion to the Luke Pen Walk and on the Kalgan Queen. At the start of the day, we split into two groups and went on buses to the start of the river or track. Mr Bonnin's group started on the Luke Pen Walk. On the way, there were many exciting sights to see such as the giant metal bird sculpture, the Kalgan River and the natural tall trees around us. We also found a beehive on the track! Although there was a couple of upset bees, luckily nobody was stung.

It was a long and enjoyable walk. Then when the group got to the spot where they would get on and off the boat, they switched over with the other group and went on to the Kalgan Queen. As Mr Bonnin's group set sail we got a type of damper with 11 ingredients, which is very different to the original plain damper that he was talking about. He showed us the native birds that live in and around the Kalgan River and also told us all about the birds. Two pelicans in particular “Percy” and “Perch” that he looked after when they got stuck in fishing line and as he was looking after them, he taught Percy how to “dance” (spin in a circle) and Perch how to catch a fish while he was flying.

Our guide was a very knowledgeable man and told us lots of stories that relate to the areas nearby and the ancient river. Everybody enjoyed the cruise. After a big walk and cruise, we chilled out, played some sport games and ate the hot dogs at Emu Point. We then went back to school with another memory that will stick with us for a long time.

Year Seven

It’s been an exciting few weeks in the kitchen as the Year Seven's learnt about the roles of sugar and fat, both in our diets and during baking.  Making chocolate chip cookies and a delicious pear cake offered students the opportunity to think about ways to satisfy their sweet cravings from discretionary food choices.

Year Eight

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  Students have investigated ways to incorporate the five food groups and seasonal foods, as well as quick and easy ‘grab and go’ ideas to eat in the morning when time is an issue.  The class produced and presented several healthy breakfasts,  including Bircher muesli, portable breakfast wraps, porridge, mini ham and herb souffles, and four ways with eggs.

Year Nine

We all love pizza! Students learnt how yeast works to make a variety of pizza doughs, then investigated the fibre, sugar, and salt content of frozen, takeaway, and home-made pizzas.  Following the design process, students created healthy and delicious pizzas considering the five food groups and the use of seasonal ingredients
