End of term update: Colour Run Fun and VET Show

In the last weeks of term we have exciting activities for the school community to get involved in, including the Years Eleven and Twelve VET show and the P&F Colour Run Fundraiser.

At the Colour Run, let's spread some colour and joy! This year’s Colour Run Fundraiser is coming soon! On Wednesday 6 April, students will take part in a Colour Run around the school while being splashed with bursts of colour. Not only is this event fun and active but also all the funds raised will be used to support Albany Youth Association and Ronald McDonald House, so grab a white t-shirt and school bathers, don’t forget to bring a few spare coins or feel free to donate through MyGSG. Be sure to pack some spare clothes and a towel; things are about to get colourful!

Students had been working very hard on selections of performances including, Michael Jackson, ABBA, Mt. Joy and many more, to present at the first VET show of the year, held yesterday.  Luckily enough, performers were able to have a small live audience while also being live streamed for parents to view. Well done to all performers and we hope that all the viewers enjoyed the show. Thank you to all music coordinators and the IT Department for making this day possible.  See the article below for more details.

Hospitality

Year Ten

Thank you to Mrs Henderson’s Homeroom who are growing herbs for the Hospitality classes.  The students have preserved some green and purple basil by freezing it in portioned amounts of olive oil using upcycled, plastic egg cartons.  They’ve also preserved our Grammar Grown parsley the same way, and some students are drying sage leaves.  Utilising the Aquaculture food smokers, a selection of spices were smoked that were included in a pickling mixture to preserve cucumbers, red onion, and strawberries.  The students were introduced to vegetarian eating and have marinated carrots to replace red sausages in a hot dog.  They compared the two, and even made their own charred tomato sauce!

VET Hospitality

The VET Hospitality students continue to work through their units of competency, whilst participating in practical food and beverage production lessons.  The Year Elevens produced a selection of mini quiches using a production line method and honed several new knife skills by producing Thai chicken meatballs.  Making and storing spring rolls for future use as an appetiser allowed students to work in the Hospitality kitchen and the boarding kitchen where they learnt the safe use of the commercial deep fryer to cook their spring rolls.  The Year Twelves continue to master their skills at producing a range of industry standard non-alcoholic drinks.

The VET Show

On Wednesday, VET Music students across Years Eleven and Twelve participated in the much-anticipated VET Show. We had all been working very hard to ensure we were ready for the performance but even so, I’m sure that there were a few nerves as the day finally arrived. Overall, we had an amazing show and all the students who participated did a wonderful job. Although we couldn’t have a full crowd and were restricted somewhat by our masks, that didn’t stop us from having an excellent show. I would like to thank all the teachers who allowed the VET show to continue, as I’m sure we are all very grateful for the fact that we were able to perform at all.

I would like to give a special mention to Mr Fowler for all the work he put into helping us prepare for the show and just being a wonderful role model in how to approach the performance. A big thank you to Ms Luxton for keeping us all in line and to the IT Department for their help in live-streaming the show as it would not have been possible without them. Well done to everyone who performed, I can’t wait to see everyone in the next show!

Year Eleven ATAR Geography

Last week the Year Eleven ATAR Geography class did the Australian Geography Competition (Home - Australian Geography Competition). This is the first time that the competition has been online.

For Year Eleven students they have the chance to be selected for Geography’s Big Week Out and the International Geography Olympiad depending on their performance.

Sustainability Spotlight

In Great Southern Grammar classrooms we have reintroduced paper waste bins. This is a great and easy opportunity to do your part for the environment and the school. Please put your paper rubbish in the black tub that should be next to your regular waste bin in your classroom!
