Date                      Friday 1 April 2022

Site                        116 Moola Road

Day                        Day 2 at this site

It was the last day of the Term 1 and the boys were eager to get onsite for their third Construction Immersion Day this year. The boys worked safely and diligently throughout the day to complete all tasks.

Tasks completed on the day:

  • The boys completed a job safety analysis (JSA) for all tasks to be completed throughout the day, this helped us to identify potential hazards and allowed us to complete each task in the safest possible way.
  • 6m lengths of 190 x 45 pine timber were tied to the ute roof racks using ratchet straps.
  • A construction site was set up including safety barricades, setting out construction tools, setting out string line profile and the material was stored appropriately on site.
  • The boys learnt how to mix cement using a concrete mixer (5m aggregate mix was used at a ratio of five to one – five parts aggregate to one part cement)
  • Wheelbarrows and shovels were used to pour concrete into post hole footing to set our post stirrups. (the post holes were 350mm in diameter and 600mm deep)
  • galvanised stirrups were set into place using the string line profiles (450mm long x 90mm x 90mm)
  • spirit levels were then used to plumb up the pine posts (pine posts 2800mm long 90mm wide x 90 mm thick posts)
  • the posts were braced with 70mm x 35mm pine stud material to keep them plumb.
  • one of the timber bearers was attached to the external wall on the house as a pole plate, the boys were able to locate the studs inside the external wall using a stud finder and using the existing nail holes on the weatherboards (the bearer was 6000m long x 190 x 45mm pine timber).
  • the job site was cleaned up and gear was packed away in the trailer for the end of the day.

We estimate that this project will take another two full days to complete and we look forward to keeping you informed about the progress.
