From the Auslan classroom

From Liam, Auslan Specialist Teacher

How nice it has been to be back at school for a whole Term. It has felt like it has gone so fast. We have been re-establishing some basic conversational signs in Auslan, and completed a whole big unit on shopping including learning, or being exposed to, approximately 60 different signs. And a few other things we have managed to fit in over the term as well.

 Deaflympics

For the last couple of weeks we have been learning about the 2021 Deaflympics (postponed to this year due to Covid disruptions). The students have been learning about when the first edition of the Deaflympics took place, where it took place and lots of history about the Deaflympics. 2021 (2022) edition begins next term and we will follow along to see how the different nations participating go.

 Competition

Lastly, I am happy to announce a competition that is being run in Auslan this year. Each term the students come to learn Auslan and also learn about Deaf culture and community. On top of this, they are representing their year level. Classes are awarded points based on their commitment to learning when they come to the Auslan Classroom as well as their demonstration of school values. The results will not be finalised before the Newsletter goes out so you will have to find out from your child after school on Friday, or be present at the final assembly of term when the ‘Golden Hand’ will be presented to the winning Year level. The year level that wins the Golden Hand will be able to display the trophy in their classrooms for the entirety of the following term.
