Debating news

At the end of last term, Kilvington debating teams competed in round two of the Debaters Association Victoria's (DAV) debating competition.

More recently, the students in D grade debated each other on the topic - ‘animal testing should be banned’, while the VCE team competed against Parkdale Secondary College on the topic of 'regretting the rise of cancel culture'.

In VCE, Kilvington defeated Parkdale, with both Hamish Bruce and Lolly Seligmann scoring 77 points as best speakers. In D Grade, Kilvington 1 defeated Kilvington 2 by one point. Maria Wang was awarded best speaker.

Last week, the third round of the DAV Debating competition for the Ormond region took place here at Kilvington Grammar. The students in the VCE team had a secret topic - ‘Australian High Court justices should be elected’ - which they were given an hour before the debate and had to prepare without any access to their devices.

Years 9 an 10 students debated on the prepared topic - ‘public transport should be free.’ It was a successful night for Kilvington who won all of their debates for their grade.

Year 11 cycling camp

Sofia Jorgovic and Thomas Vanston, Year 11

Having missed last year’s camp, we were ecstatic to be able to participate in the cycling camp this year. Once we had been told that the distance we were cycling was around 75km, we all thought this was going to be a horribly long journey that included dealing with the cold and sleeping in small tents.

Many of us felt anxious on the initial four-hour bus trip up to Beechworth, but upon arriving and setting up our tents, we quickly realised how memorable of an experience this was going to be.

After our first night, we woke up to a very chilly and damp morning to pack up our things and set off.  During the first leg of the ride, we had an assortment of slight bumps and hills to contend with; finishing off with a steep uphill ride to Taylor’s Point for lunch ... all the while, making banter with each other and puzzling over the riddles our OEG leader gave us.

Our group consisted of a multitude of different cycling abilities, some cycled quite often, while some hadn’t touched a bike in years. Despite this, we were still able to make the whole ride enjoyable for everyone. The second leg took us on a nice downhill ride from Taylor’s Point to Myrtleford.

The second night, our whole group sat around singing along to a variety of campfire songs, with a ukulele and the occasional drumming on a tub. Setting off the next morning was a bit tricky due to our bodies being sore from the previous day, but we got over it.

Our final stretch was a 30km slight incline to Bright, which, thinking back, was barely noticeable. Arriving at the final campsite on Thursday, we had come to appreciate our experience on this riding camp, and all had a great final night. Even the six-hour trip didn’t phase us.

Overall, we learned that we are more capable than we might initially believe, and the miniscule odds we faced made the entire experience pay off even more, because we were with our friends.

Connecting at Year 12 Camp

Demi Gong, Year 12

I had heard Year 12 camp was the greatest camp of all! We do not have camp back in Shanghai, and so starting from Term 1 holidays, I became excited about going. To my surprise, it was better than I thought!

I particularly loved the film we watched —Troy. Also, I enjoyed the view from the campsite. It was a perfect opportunity to connect to the natural environment and see wildlife such as kangaroos and different species of birds.

The African dancing and drumming were my favourite activities. During this activity, we not only learnt the dancing and drumming skills, but also gained an insight into African lives.

The camp was also an opportunity to connect with the entire year level as well as teachers through team activities. Although team activities were a challenge for me, as I am not a sporty person, it was lovely to get involved and work with students I do not usually speak to.

Furthermore, Mr Brinson’s presentation about sleeping strategies and Miss Bryce’s presentation about healthy eating were very helpful. I learnt tips on how to rest and have a more balanced diet, which are crucial in performing my best in VCE.

Overall, Year 12 camp was a great time to relax and enjoy a break from the stress of studies.
