Orienteering Twilight Events

Think you know your neighbourhood? 

 

Think again! Get some fresh air and a fresh perspective by exploring your local parks and streets with a map. Park and Street Orienteering is a fun, social way to give your body and mind a great workout. Park and Street Orienteering is enjoyed by hundreds of people of all ages and abilities, from toddlers to eighty-somethings, from elite athletes to social strollers. Be as competitive or as casual as you like. Walk or run; compete individually or in a group.

 

The summer series of twilight events for 2021 will be held each Thursday evening throughout February. Start times will be from 5:30 to 6:30 with a course close time of 7:00 pm.

EntriesFees for these events will be $5 per event regardless of age and whether individual or group. You are encouraged to pre-enter through Eventor if possible.

 

What to bring

  • comfortable running/walking clothes and shoes
  • Smart phone or GPS watch with MapRun app installed to record your course
  • water bottle (post run or for long events)
  • $5 per entry (or pay through Eventor or by EFT)

MapRun – is a smartphone app based on GPS locations.  With MapRun, your phone or GPS-enabled watch will “beep” at each control point. It will record your time, distance and points.  When you finish, upload your result to the Leaderboard, where you can compare how you went with others on the same course.  Find out more about MapRun.

 

Tips: if using a phone, download MapRun6 from your app store.  If using a smartwatch, download MapRunG from the Garmin IQ store or similar.  We can provide instructions and assistance at the event.

 

When you arrive, Head to the Registration table to check in. We are now registered with Service NSW as a 'Covid Safe' organisation and have a QR code that can be read by the Service NSW phone app for contact tracing purposes. The organiser will also keep a separate record of your attendance and contact details.

 

Pay your entry fee of $5.  Please bring the correct amount if at all possible. Alternatively you can pay by EFT to our bank account: BSB 932000, A/c 732641 Northern Tablelands Orienteering Club

 

We’ll provide you a with a map, help you choose a course, and give some simple instructions. Start MapRun on your smart device and select your course (Select Event > NSW > Armidale > appropriate course). When ready, tap Go to Start and head to the start banner to begin your course.

 

The courses - These events will use a SCATTER course format.

  • Locate a designated number of controls (eg 10 of 20) in any order. First to finish with the correct number of controls wins
  • Course lengths range from 3 to 6 km

When you finish, you must return to the Finish, and report to the Registration table so that we know you are safely back. Courses close at 7:00 pm; if you haven’t returned by then we will call the contact phone number you provided at check in.  See you there.
