Room 24 - Penpals

This year we have had a lot of fun writing letters to our pen-pals. Our pen-pals are from the Year 2/3 class at Williams Primary School. Williams is situated in the Wheat Belt, so we have been learning about what it is like to live in a rural area. We have taught our pen-pals about what it is like to live in Perth and attend a big school like Burrendah.

There was always much excitement when we received our letters and we have learned, and perfected the correct letter writing procedure.

We are sad that this is our last letter and we have made cards for our pen-pals to wish them a Merry Christmas.

Room 25

As part of our HASS curriculum in Room 25, we have been researching different festivals celebrated around the world. Once we had completed our research, we organised our information under different headings. Then, with the guidance of Mrs Stone from Room 28, we found out how to use the ‘Talk to Text’ function in Pages on the iPad to record our information. After that, we chose three photographs and used the green screen to merge ourselves with one of our pictures. We had a lot of fun learning how to air-drop our work, as well as using the green screen as you can see in some of our photographs.

We have also been participating in a STEM challenge of creating different games for the Room 25 Class Carnival. This STEM challenge allows students to design, test, and play carnival-style games. Each game we’ve designed incorporates probability requirements for the game in words and as a fraction. It is lovely to see our students demonstrating their knowledge of the design process and their understanding of probability. All of us have enjoyed making these games with recycling materials!

Room 26

In Room 26, we have been reading and writing poetry. Last week, we learnt about a humorous type of poem called a limerick. After reading some limericks and analysing the structure, the students worked together to create banks of rhyming words for their own poetry. Then, they wrote their own limericks, focusing on getting the right number of syllables on each line. Finally, students published their work using MS Publisher. The students wrote some great and very amusing poems.

Room 28 - STEM Challenge

What an amazing year we have had.  The students in Room 28 are excitedly awaiting becoming Year 4’s.

This term, we have been discovering technology processes during our STEM sessions.  This came to very good use during our ‘Newspaper Shoe STEM Challenge’.

The students were given the brief that they needed to make one shoe out of only newspaper and masking tape.  One group member needed to be able to put on, take off, and walk a length of the classroom in their shoe.  This challenge seemed very simple during the planning stage, however, we were all very surprised at how difficult it became when it was time to put our plans into action.

The students had so much fun designing, creating, testing, changing, demonstrating, and reviewing their shoes and we are pleased to say that every group had success.  It was a messy challenge but well worth it from the discussions and learning that took place.

We hope you enjoy looking at our stylish shoes.  Maybe you will see them in stores soon.
