R U OK DAY

As a community, it’s important to try to encourage everyone to view positive mental health outcomes as a shared goal. In doing so, we need to find ways in breaking down stereotypes around ill health. Anxiety, depression, and other associated health challenges may afflict anyone and often for a number of reasons. In our community everyone should be encouraged to see that accessing help and support in times of need is a perfectly natural thing to do and something that is very desirable.

Our students, enjoy a range of options and entertainments that previous generations never had, also face complexities and challenges never previously encountered. It is vital that we do act to equip them with new and more developed personal skills to help them navigate this new landscape. Our young people want to support each other in being happy, healthy, and well connected to their community.

“R U OK Day is primarily about inspiring people to take the time to ask, “Are you okay?” of their friends, family and anybody who might be struggling at a particular moment in their life.

At times we are all challenged by things that life throws at us, be it the pressure of school life, family issues or personal issues; and it’s important that we have strong and caring connections with friends and family who can provide a vital safety net to help us cope with those challenges.

It can take a lot of trust and understanding for someone to open up about what they might be going through – so being there for one another in both good and bad times is the key to building that trust.

Next week, our Student Leaders will visit classes around the school to present a mini lesson about RU OK Day. Student Leaders are excited about this opportunity to connect with other students to raise awareness and to promote positive action about this real social issue.
