From the Assistant Principal

Week 10 Activities

Due to COVID-19 our traditional program of excursions in Week 10 has not been able to take place. In light of this we are organising some activities this week for students in Years 7 – 9. The activities will be at no cost to students and they will take place at school and at locations around town.

Students will take part in a variety of activities including those listed below:

Year 7: filmmaking, badminton, volleyball, challenge & team building activities, cybersafety and wellbeing sessions.

Year 8: Italian Immersion Day, cooking, indoor sports, creative arts, fishing, cybersafety and wellbeing sessions.

Year 9: Leadership/Christian Living Day activities, cooking, indoor sports, creative arts, fishing, cybersafety and wellbeing sessions.

Cost

There will be no cost to students – the school will pay for all activities.

Food

Break times will be different over the three days. Lunch will be from 11.45 – 12.45 on Tuesday and Wednesday and at 1.00 pm on Thursday. The students will be able to access the canteen for lunch but they are encouraged to bring their own food as they may be off site or breaking at a time when the canteen is not open. On Thursday students will picnic together on the back oval, bringing food as planned in their year groups. The SRC are providing drinks and icy poles for all students.

Clothing & Equipment

Students are able to wear plain clothes on both Tuesday and Wednesday and their normal sports uniform on Thursday. Closed in shoes appropriate to sporting activities will need to be worn.

  • Students who have chosen fishing will need to have their OWN fishing rod/lines and lures (no bait) otherwise they will not be able to take part in this activity.

Please contact Miss Bailey if you have any further questions.

Glen Innes Steer Extravaganza 2020

Over the weekend my family and I exhibited the steers and heifer the Agriculture classes had been preparing. The 5 steers and 1 heifer had been sourced from Glen Innes Stock and Station agent Shad Bailey and ex-student Steve Daley. The Agriculture students had been preparing the cattle since late Term 1.

As it was one of the very few ‘hoof and hook’ steer competitions to go ahead this year and the competition was outstanding as everyone had plenty of time to prepare their animals. Competitors had travelled from all over NSW and QLD (with very strict COVID-19 restrictions), to attend the weekend with all the top people in the industry exhibiting stock.

The junior entries were highly successful with our heifer “Honey Hush” winning Reserve Champion Heifer and the steer “Red Solo Cup” winning Champion Steer and Grand Champion Junior Exhibit.

In the open section we also exhibited some of Shad’s own animals taking our number of exhibits to 10 animals. The steers were well prepared by our team and only two steers missed out on ribbons in a very tough field of competitors.

It was a very different show to attend with no students. I sincerely hope to be able to resume attending competitions with students in the near future. However, for this competition even though they could not attend, the students had prepared the cattle to perfection and the animals looked their best.

Thank you to Shad and Steve who are big supporters of our agriculture program. There is a real benefit for the students who go through the Ag team. It is an activity they can develop their employability skills. Even the judge, Mr Ben Toll stated that industry employers favour students who have been in Agriculture teams. He cited Woolworths as one of those employers, saying that anyone who applies for employment in the livestock division who has been in a show team automatically gets an interview. Woolworths is just one of the employers who value highly the skills gained from working with stock and in a team environment.

The students and I look forward to examining the carcass results when they become available.
