Grade 5 Home Learning Snapshot - Term 4/Week 1

Writing
We will be moving onto the next Trait from the 6+1 Traits of Writing - VOICE. Voice is the 'soul' of writing. It's how the writer wants to be 'heard' in a piece of writing - through their style, personality, emotions, point of view and experiences. Students will learn about Voice through the use of different pieces of Artwork, Music and everyday objects. They will learn how Voice links into The Writing Process.
Reading
This week students will be focusing on Thinking Beyond the Text. They will use the strategy of inferring to begin thinking about the theme or message in different books. This week the focus will be on Fiction books. Students will read picture story books and use clues in the text to find the theme or message.
Maths
In the first week back of Term 4, students will begin learning about money and financial Mathematics. Students will complete a number of assessments throughout the week to determine what they already know and what they need to learn. On Wednesday, students will have their mini lesson in Maths and learn about how to solve various financial problems using the four operations. Over the course of the week, students will begin to learn about how to create a budget by planning their own camping trip.
Unit of Inquiry
In UOI this term, students will continue with the transdisciplinary theme; ‘How Do We Organise Ourselves’, for the first three weeks. This week we spring into action as we dive into a more in-depth and detailed analysis of the relationship between economy, society, technology and the environment. Students will select a business of their own choosing and will research how that business impacts the four areas mentioned above. This year technology will be included in this unit of study to highlight the new developments that 2020 has brought into our lives as we all navigate new ways of learning, doing business and organising our lives.
Wellbeing - Zones Of Regulation
Returning after a well-deserved school break – SPRING is all around us! We trust on your walks you’ve seen the blossoms and the prolific flowering gardens. Some of you may have been part of beautifying your own garden at home with your family. SPRING is a time of new beginnings and growth, so RECHARGE – REFRESH – REFOCUS! This week we will recap on the terms and concepts we have explored when recognising and regulating our emotions.
