Koorie News

On Friday 3rd February we welcomed 2023, with a Smoking Ceremony being performed at our first school assembly. Thomas Harrison a Koorie Engagement Support Officer in the Outer East Region conducted the ceremony and spoke with our community about the significance of this tradition, and his role to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and their friends within school.

A smoking ceremony is a traditional Aboriginal custom which involves burning native plants just enough to produce smoke. These ceremonies have been conducted for thousands of years. They are used to cleanse places and people of bad spirits, to promote the wellbeing of Indigenous people as well as guests on Country. People attending the Smoking Ceremony were invited to walk through the smoke for an individual cleansing.

We would like to thank Thomas for his visit and for sharing with the students about Aboriginal traditions.
