"From the College Archives"

Did you know that the ‘house’ or ‘team’ system that was utilised in the early years of St. Peter’s College, from 1994 until 2011 inclusive, was based on grouping the students for whole school sporting events? These groups were referred to as teams. Usually, the only time that the team came together was to organise the competitors for a particular St. Peter’s College carnival such as the Swimming Carnival or the Athletics Carnival.

The original teams were represented by the colours Blue, Green, Red and White. The colours were a legacy of the St Francis Xavier years and represented the colours and house names that were utilised by St Francis Xavier College. Former staff member, James Lawlor, was the male Captain of White team in 1994. He returned to St. Peter’s in 2002 as Mr. James Lawlor and taught Science, as well as being a Year Eight Home Room teacher. He was also the first graduate of St. Peter’s College to return as a staff member.

These teams also had sporting names: Boyle, Fraser, Decastella (sic) and Marsh. One can readily see the homage paid to Australian sporting greats Raelene Boyle, Robert de Castella, Dawn Fraser, and Rodney Marsh. These names were later dropped when St. Peter’s College began operations that were separate to St. Francis Xavier College. There was also a slight colour change. White team was replaced with Gold team.

In 2002 there was some discussion amongst staff, in particular the Religious Education staff, concerning giving each colour team a name and, thereby, creating some sort of House ethos.  Mr. Terry Feely, the principal of the time, initiated the discussion as he wanted the house names to be less sporting and more unique to St. Peter’s College. Feely proposed four names that he believed expressed the Petrine nature of St. Peter’s College. Two of the proposed names were Caesarea and Capernaum. His idea of naming the teams was embraced in principle by the staff that were consulted. However, the proposed names were cumbersome, considering their intended purpose. There was a consensus that “Go Capernaum” or “Come on Caesarea” would not engender the required, and appropriate, sporting aggression on the field of battle! Consequently, the teams remained ‘colours’ until the introduction of the current House structure that began in 2012.
