Sports Update

Vermont Secondary College

 Intermediate Boys Cricket

Finally, our team got to play on 8/3/23. Under  reasonable cloud, with the sun making very brief guest appearances, our Team were able to make short work of Highvale SC. Chasing a modest target of 64 off 15 overs, our batters mopped up the total with 8 overs to spare. Fair to say we then had a long, leisurely lunch break.

Special mentions:

Bowling: Taj G, tight restrictions of runs.

Batting: Opener Nisith A a blazing 30+.

So off to the final against Glen Waverley SC- a stones throw away on Oval # 1.

GW posted a handy score of 120 off 15 overs so the chase was on. Great bowling by Lucas H in the middle overs. Our openers, the afore mentioned Nisith and Lucas got off to a flyer and after 5 overs were going at 10 an over. Standing at square leg I was getting pretty confident. Unfortunately, Lucas feathered to the keeper and we collapsed somewhat, however, with Nisith still going strong we were always going to go close. In fact right to the final over; where we fell 6 short of the target.

Well played Team, we may have fallen short in the final game, but you were an absolute pleasure to take out of the school confines and the Vermont Values were well upheld.

Waverley Division Swimming

Junior Shield – 2nd place by an agonisingly close margin of 3 points

Intermediate Shield – 2nd place

Senior Shield – 1st place

Age group champions:

U14B Joel G 36pts in 5 events

U16G Annika T 38pts in 4 events

U16B Alfred Z 40pts in 5 events

U20G Mackenzie E 30pts in 3 events

U20B Josh C 50pts in 5 events

We would like to thank all students for their fantastic efforts on the day.

Many students competed out of their age groups to fill gaps, as well as swim in races that weren’t marked as their perceived forte.

A special mention to those students who were listed as emergencies for events, and still came along to support the team.

Without you, the success of the day would not have been possible, and your commitment has not gone unnoticed.

EMR Swimming will be held at Aquanation on Tuesday the 28th of March.

Senior Round Robin

Girls Cricket

On Wednesday 1st March the Senior Girls competed in Division Cricket. Our first match was up against Mount Waverly.

We batted first with Kate and Stella opening. Stella made a magnificent 50 and had to retire (as per the rules) while Kate made 24 with plenty of boundaries.

Both girls worked wonderfully together to contribute to our 116 runs.

We then fielded with only 8 players, however our sharp fielding and willingness to chase down every ball and back each other up saw Mount Waverly make 64 in the 10 over innings. Tamara picked up a great wicked with her pressure bowling.

Our second match was against Glen Waverly. Again, our impressive bowling and fielding saw a low score from the opposition, making 4/30. Fantastic bowling by Annie, Rituja and Kate saw wickets fall fast, with Kate then getting another wicket with a run out off her own bowling.

It was then our turn to chase with Jess and Rituja opening. The girls wasted no time getting straight into it making the 31 runs to win easily in about 3 overs.

We now progress to Region cricket which is Thursday 9th of March.

Well done to Stella, Kate, Rituja, Jess, Annie, Maddie, Tamara and Sunday and a massive thank you to our Year 9 helpers Mitch and Hamish for scoring and carrying the equipment.

Boys/Mixed Cricket

Senior boys cricket started its campaign with two stunning victories on Wednesday 1/3/23. Game one we took on the might of Highvale. We won the toss and batted and carved out a handy total of 170 runs from 15 overs. Despite some rust in the field we were able to keep the opposition to under 100 runs to qualify for the final.

The final was against Glen Waverley where we won the toss again and elected to bat. Against stronger opposition, we made a modest total of 112 runs as their bowlers were running a terrific line and length. Knowing we couldn't field like we did in game one the lads were up for the fight. At one point the run rate was very achievable for GW.

When the chips were down and the whips were cracking the lads caught everything and sent the stumps on cartwheels to claim a famous victory. With a team full of batting and bowling depth, there is no ceiling to how far this group can go.

Boys/Mixed Volleyball

The Senior Boys/Mixed Volleyball team attended their Term 1 Sports Round Robin at Mullum Mullum Stadium.

The Team were looking forward to this tournament because they have grown very strong over the past couple of weeks and were keen to put their training into practice.

They started off a little nervously, but after some really good rallies they gained confidence, which was shown through the great serves, nice three touches and steady digs.

Every match was very exciting and thrilling till the end. We won matches against Mount Waverley and Glen Waverley but not the formidable forces of Highvale, so 2 out 3 games isn't that bad.

The final was a tough and exciting game with lots of nerves. Highvale was too strong and took the game to the next level with some awesome high powered spikes at the net.

The final score was 15-8, 15-6, 10-4. The team was a real asset to the college, the community and to themselves. Well done on your efforts. Happy setting.

Girls Volleyball

Senior girls were competitive all day against Mount Waverley, Glen Waverley and Highvale. Wins for the day included multiple sets, however this was not enough to bring home the chocolates.

Well done to all students for getting involved on the day and representing the college.

Senior Tennis

Senior girls tennis had a great day out learning the fundamentals of the game. An honourable mention to Sophie B for her tennis prowess and high level shot selection during crucial parts of games, sets and matches.

Boys/Mixed Baseball

On Wednesday the 1st of March, our Senior Baseball Team had an extremely successful day going through the Waverley Division undefeated!

In the first game against Highvale SC, our bats came alive early, scoring 5 runs in the first inning off the back of some superb hitting. Blake M started on the mound and kept the opposition scoreless through the first 2 innings. Jake M did a great job to back it up on the mound and our defense played an important role in restricting Highvale to 1 run for the game.

After some aggressive base running and excellent hitting, the final score was 12-1.

The second game of the day was against Mt Waverley SC and this proved to be a tougher challenge.

The opposing pitcher kept us to 2 runs in the first inning, whilst Blake M started well again on the mound. After seeing off the Mt Waverley starting pitcher in the 3rd inning, some impressive hitting from Jaidyn L resulted in a long home run to right field. This impressive hitting lead the way for a productive 3rd inning, resulting in a 6-2 win.

After winning the first 2 games, the team was very confident moving into the final game against Glen Waverley SC. With the bats firing early, VSC got off to a quick start with the lead out to 10-0 in a hurry! With an insurmountable lead of 12-0, the game finished early due to the mercy rule and our baseball team will now turn their focus to the Eastern Metropolitan Region Finals which are being held on Tuesday the 2nd of May.

Athletics Carnival

The Vermont Secondary College Athletics Carnival will be held next Friday the 17th of March. We look forward to seeing all students getting involved in as many events as possible. Stirling will be looking to go back to back with swimming and athletics... Can Hotham or Macedon spoil the party?
