Craft Room

A big welcome to all our families, especially to our new Prep community. For families that don’t know me, my name is Antoinette Vaiano.  I feel so privileged to be teaching art at TPS for as long as I have, and that I am still enjoying it so much! I teach mainstream art and Steiner craft. I would also like to introduce you to Mary who has been volunteering in the art room for about ten years now. She is an amazing support and loves working with all the children.

We started the term reviewing our Deadly Values by creating collaborative art works. All students created abstract artworks using paint and straws to blow patterns and shapes. Students needed to demonstrate our deadly values of trust, respect, integrity, perseverance and of course working together, to complete their artworks. After our art discussions, each class decided how to complete the artworks and how they wanted to present the final works.  I have included images showing students working collaboratively on their designs.

In week three we started work on our craft projects. Students in foundation expired nature crafts using leaves that they collected from the school gardens to make leaf rubbings. We used wax crayons to great effect. Over the next few weeks students will be introduced to threading a needle and simple stitching to make a hessian bag. Class one and two have been making their French knitting looms to be used in their classrooms with their teachers. Both classes will be working to complete their recorder bags for the rest of the term.

Classes from three to six all have knitting projects to complete. These knitting projects have been carried over from term four of last year so students will be familiar with the various projects but will need to demonstrate perseverance and resistance to complete their knitting to a finished design.

To support student learning, parents are invited into the art room.  It is especially helpful if you are able to support students with their various knitting projects, but any help is greatly appreciated. You will need a current working with children check. Please sign in at the office before you come to the art room.

I am also trying to get the TPS community craft group up and running again. This has always been a great way for our parents, grandparents and carers to come along each Wednesday to the art room and create interesting craft things to sell at our next BBQ or Art festival. If you are interested in picking up a new skill or would like to share a skill then this would be perfect for you. Toddlers are also welcome to join you in the art room. This is a great way to meet other parents and become valuable members of our TPS community.

Please email me any questions or to express your interest.

Looking forward to working with all you again,

Antoinette Vaiano
