Art Room

A big welcome to all our families, especially to our new Prep community. For families that don’t know me, my name is Antoinette Vaiano.  I feel so privileged to be teaching art at TPS for as long as I have, and that I am still enjoying it so much! I teach mainstream art and Steiner craft. I would also like to introduce you to Mary who has been volunteering in the art room for about ten years now. She is an amazing support and loves working with all the children.

We started the term reviewing our Deadly Values by creating collaborative art works. All students created abstract artworks using paint and straws to blow patterns and shapes. Students needed to demonstrate our deadly values of trust, respect, integrity, perseverance and of course working together, to complete their artworks. After our art discussions, each class decided how to complete the artworks and how they wanted to present the final works.  I have included images showing students working collaboratively on their designs.

In week three we started work on our folio designs. Students in the prep grades used bubble writing to write their names. They then turned their names into cute and crazy monster letters.  Grades one/two looked at picture lettering to create their name into an image of their choice. Grade three/four students decided that their theme would be word pictures (inspired by last year's Pop artists). The five/six classes choose a cartoon theme for their folio designs. Students always create the most original and creative designs on their folios and it is something that all students look forward to at the start of every year!

This term we will be exploring the works of artist Joshua Yeldham, focusing on trees, plants and owls. We will explore the art techniques of Yeldrum and be inspired to create similar artworks. We will use the medium of painting, drawing and collage to create these works.  Art elements such as colour, texture, shape and form will also be explored.

Below is a link to a video of Yledrum explaining his art practice that you may find interesting.

To support student learning, parents are invited into the art room. You will need a current working with children check. Please sign in at the office before you come to the art room.

I am also trying to get the TPS community craft group up and running again. This has always been a great way for our parents, grandparents and carers to come along each Wednesday to the art room and create interesting craft things to sell at our next school BBQ or Arts Festival. If you are interested in picking up a new skill or would like to share a skill, then this would be perfect for you. Toddlers are also welcome to join you in the art room. This is a great way to meet other parents and become active members of our TPS community.

Please email me any questions or to express your interest.

Looking forward to working with all you again,

Antoinette Vaiano
