Library News

The Year 7 library orientations were held with the teacher-librarian, in collaboration with the English faculty, during Week 3. All students had an opportunity to hear about and explore the school library.  Excitingly many students borrowed books to read for class and for enjoyment during their orientation. Year 7 students were given a scavenger hunt to undertake that involved using the my library search catalog, their background knowledge of classic children’s literature and they were able to create their own book spine poem. Examples of their creations include:

Sisters
Rich and rare
Forever Shiver
The glimpse of the lost heir.

By Charlie and Amber

At the end of everything
We were liars
Beautiful broken things
Chasing the shadows
In the waterhole.

By Lily and Victoria

This year the library has had a great start to borrowing with 394 books loaned in the first 13 days of school. Some of these loans came from Year 9 class borrowing. These students attended a book talk in the library to assist them in connecting with books and finding an interesting story to read for sustained reading in English. Students are also able to borrow from the school ebook library through the Wheelers platform https://henrykendah.eplatform.co/

The Premiers’ Reading Challenge opens on 27 February this year. Students in Years 7 to 9 are encouraged to participate and read 20 books before the challenge closes in August. Students can record their reading online at the website for the challenge, https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html and can include books read since the challenge closed last year. A  few changes to the rules have occurred. Students are now able to read up to 10 choice books and 5 books from a series.

This week we are celebrating Library Lovers’ Week. A number of activities are underway including ‘blind date with a book’ which has proven popular, with many students willing to take a chance on a story based only on a few pieces of information and without seeing its cover.

Students will also have a quiet reading lunchtime, they will be able to have their photo taken with a book of their choice to become part of our permanent readers display, and there will be a library book decorating activity students can sign up to do. A book cover design competition is also being held where students design an original cover based on a book blurb.
