Specialist Program

Career Education – Annemarie Holmyard

Year 11

Year 11 students have been working toward the VCAL Numeracy Learning Outcome 5 – Preparing for Work where they have been learning about tax, payslips and financial literacy related to work. This has included a webinar where the students in SAP interacted with a member of the Australian Tax Office to learn about filing a tax return, obtaining a tax file number and superannuation.  The students have also learnt how to read a payslip and calculate earnings and fill in work related forms.

Science – Sam Hutson

This term Secondary 11/12 students in the ‘Mythbusters #2’ Elective continued to participate in small group experiments to solve science myths that they researched in Term three. Some of these myths included Can nappies explode in water?, Can you really make a rainbow using skittles?, Can you blow up a balloon with soda and candy?, Can you pick up a small object with your back flat against the wall? And are no two fingerprints alike? Towards the end of Term four all year 11/12 students participating in this program had the opportunity to participate in the ‘Forensic Detective’ incursion. Students worked in small groups and used real forensic science techniques including ink chromatography, PH tests, handwriting analysis, blood analysis and fingerprint dusting to solve a crime.

Food Technology- Jane Stacey

What a fun term this has been! Students chose their own recipes which included nachos, san choy bau, fish patties, caramel slice, Malaysian laksa and chicken fajitas. The students then made a Christmas fruit cake which they decorated with icing and edible icing figures or shapes. They looked amazing!
