Principal's Report

Busy Times

Firstly, an apology for the lateness of the newsletter for this issue. Thursday is my usual day for newsletter report preparation but, of course, it was Music Showcase that evening and we spent all day setting up, rehearsing and preparing so my day was full of sound equipment, leads, cables, plugs, lights, computers and microphones. “That’s OK,” I thought, “I can do the newsletter Friday.” Little did I know that I’d be very unwell Friday and unable to come to school. So, here we are. It’s Monday and I’m finally getting my newsletter done.

Music Showcase

What an incredible success and an amazing array of talent, was our inaugural Music Showcase on Thursday evening. Parents were treated to wonderful performances from students across all year levels. Congratulations to all of the students who performed. You were all wonderful!

It’s a very brave thing to do to even audition for such an event, but to get up there and perform as you did is amazing, and you should all be proud! We can’t let it go by without thanking our wonderful music teachers who were the inspiration behind the event. They, along with a large team of staff volunteers organized and fabulous opportunity for our talented students to shine!

Thanks also to the hardy PFA parents who battled the cold and wind to cook the sausage sizzle outside the Showcase. It was a chilly and unpleasant night but a hot sausage was just the ticket! All in all, it was a great event and I’m pretty certain the Music Showcase will become a permanent fixture on the Lyndhurst calendar.

Sunsmart – New Rules

On Tuesday, we will be taking a revised Sunsmart policy to School Council for approval. We are a registered Sunsmart School under the umbrella of the Cancer Council of Victoria. They have changed some of their requirements for an approved Sunsmart policy. Below is a summary of the changes from the Cancer Council that will become policy at our school.

  • Sun protection measures are now used during the Sunsmart period from mid-August until end of April.
  • The sun protection measures listed are used for all outdoor activities during the daily local sun protection times.
  • The sun protection times are a forecast from the Bureau of Meteorology for the time of day UV levels are forecast to reach 3 or higher. At these levels, sun protection is recommended for all skin types. In Victoria, UV levels regularly reach 3 or higher from mid-August to the end of April.
  • Now deleted from the policy: With parent consent, children with naturally very dark skin are not required to wear sunscreen.

Prep Letters

Recently, the Preps have been learning about letter writing and last week, many, many letters landed on my desk full of comments, questions and thoughts from our Prep students. I was so impressed by the quality of their letter writing and I was so pleased that they chose to write to me. I wrote back to all of the grades, answering as many questions as I could and thanking them for their letters.

Principal’s Day – Superheroes

My personal thanks go to all of the staff and students involved in “Principal’s Day” recently. They went to the trouble of making “Superhero” costumes for all of the Principal Class (Principal and Assistant Principals) with strict instructions that we had to wear our costumes all day. We had great fun and it was so nice to have the children wishing us “Happy Principals Day” all day.
