Classic Catches at the Swimming Carnival. Photo by Dylan Sanusi-Goh

JMSS House Swimming Carnival

Oakleigh Pool was resplendent in an impressive array of Green, Blue, Silver and Purple outfits as JMSS took over the pool for our annual swimming carnival on Tuesday 9th February. The pool was swamped with "swim for a point" participants and the inaugural classic catches competition proved a crowd favourite. The day was characterised by a fantastic attendance and a positive spirit of participation.

Flannery House ensured that our Swimming shield is now complete with the names of all four of our fantastic houses with a resounding well-deserved win. Thanks to Annabel Aldous and Dylan Sanusi-Goh for photos.

To our competitive swimmers, student helpers, those who thrashed their way to a lap to get points for their House, raft builders and staff who spent a big day in the sun ensuring the smooth running of the event…sincere thanks and congratulations on your contributions to a wonderful day! We look forward to announcing age-group champions at our next assembly.

The Monash Division Swimming Championships will be held at Oakleigh Pool on Thursday March 3rd. If there are any parents who are interested in assisting on the day, please contact Mr Bartlett for details.   peter.bartlett@jmss.vic.edu.au

Physical Education

We have had a terrific start to the year in Physical Education with students honing their Volleyball skills at Monash Sport and plenty of home-runs being hit during our T-ball sessions. The remainder of the term will consist of sessions in Tennis and European Handball.

Reminders:

  • Students should bring their a clearly labelled water bottle to class.
  • A note of explanation is required on the day for any student unable to participate due to illness or injury.
  • Hats should be worn during Term One.
  • Only students who have PE period one can wear their full JMSS uniform to school. (These students must change back into full school uniform during recess). Students are required to utilise recess and lunchtime to change into their PE uniform to minimise transition times.

Each Physical Education class is involved in a Uniform Challenge.  The class with the least number of uniform indiscretions over first term will be travelling down to AMF in Clayton for a game of Laser Skirmish or ten pin bowling. For those who are waiting on any PE uniforms to arrive at PSW, please ensure that you wear alternative Physical Education attire.

Rachel admitted the leadership position was a big responsibility that will dictate all aspects of her role at Calder from the senior team down.  “I’m honoured to be given the chance to represent Calder United as their captain alongside Rachel Alonso.  It’s a big responisibility that I’m willing to take on and do the best that I can to be a leader for not only the seniour group but also the up and coming young players too.  I’m really excited for this season as Calder United – the team has really come together and it’s a very positive atmosphere and we’re gelling as both a team and a family.

Rachel joined John Monash Science School in 2015 as an AFL trainee.  She will continue to work part time in 2016 at John Monash whilst furthering her studies to become a paramedic. We wish her all the best for the start of the NPLW Season in 2016.

Food for Thought

Peak bone mass is achieved at about age 20, so activity levels as a child/ young adult will affect bone health as an older adult.
