Science and Careers

Core Science
Year 10 Core Science welcomed its new cohort with a bang (... or, at least, a flash) last week. Students used skills in scientific observation to describe the very impressive reaction between sugar in a Gummy Bear and potassium chlorate (a strong oxidant). They described an intense lilac flame, billowing soot and the sound of the very vigorous reaction. This also led into a discussion of the cross-disciplinary of science and how the Gummy Bear experiment can be linked to the traditional fields of chemistry, biology and physics.
Students will continue to hone their powers of observation in the coming weeks as they participate in their BioEyes Investigation. They will breed their own zebra fish and track development as a means of learning about genetic inheritance. We are confident they will find this a truly engaging program.
