In STEM this term, Reception and Year One students have learnt about robotic shopping. Reception students have programmed Blue-Bot robots to collect ‘Little Shop’ groceries in a store that they designed.
Year One students have applied their grid mapping skills to design a supermarket and a store guide. They collaboratively produced their shopping baskets, programmed and wrote code for a Blue-bot robot (‘shopping robot’) to collect their list of ‘Little Shop’ groceries.
Year two students have been learning about what a computer is, what are its components and what are its uses. They have explored a dismantled laptop computer, learnt to take photos of the components with an iPad, watched clips and applied this knowledge and understanding to make model laptop computers. Some Year Two students (depending on lesson availability) have connected their model laptops to Makey Makey (electric circuit board) to play games on a real laptop.
Year Three and Four students have been learning about autonomous cars (driverless car). In teams, they have programmed a LegoWeDo robot (‘autonomous car’) using its distance sensor to solve several challenges including stopping at a children’s crossing, avoiding a collision with a dog, and ordering a meal at McDonalds.
Year Five students have been learning about an input computing device called a Makey Makey which is an electric circuit board that serves as a keyboard. Students have tested materials to determine their conductivity and some Year Five students (depending on lesson availability) have applied this knowledge to design a games controller to play games on a computer.
Year Six and Seven students have been learning about the design of prosthetic (artificial) arms and legs for humans and animals, including robotic and 3D printed prosthetic limbs. In teams, students have designed and produced a prosthetic hand which can hold a polystyrene ball.
