Debating

Round One

It was a very successful opening round of the 2018 DAV debating season for the St Bede’s Squad, albeit a nervous night for many new juniors to our debating circle in 2018.  Well done to all boys who represented the College last night at Brighton Grammar School, and a big thank you to the many parents, siblings and friends who turned out to support and encourage the boys – we appreciate it.

This year St Bede’s College has entered seven teams in total; one B Grade team from Year 11, three C Grade teams from year 10 and three D Grade teams from years 8 and 9. It is great to see not only such high participation rates, but also such depth of talent and desire for success at all levels. This ideal is suitably modelled for the squad by their Captain for 2018 – Jeremy Mann, Year 11, McCristal House.

Round one saw each team open their campaign, results as follows:

B Grade:

Topic - “That we should limit the number of government funded university places”

SBC 1 – Jeremy Mann, Dillon Bulman and Mattias Seisedos defeated Brighton Grammar School 1, Best Speaker awarded to Dillon Bulman.

C Grade:

Topic: “That fossil-fuelled car sales should be banned by 2025.”

SBC 1 - Liam Collins, Elijah Barrett and Flynn Morley defeated St Leonard’s 3, Best Speaker awarded to Elijah Barrett.

SBC 2 Cameron McGoldrick, Liam Higgins and Harry Griffin, defeated by Albert Park Secondary College 4 in their first debate. Much potential exists to develop in this team and we look forward to their progress into next round.

SBC 3– James Donlon, Aaron Nowlan and Renzo Alves – Glennon, defeated by Sandringham Secondary College 1 in their first debate. A solid performance from another new team with much potential to develop further.

Thank you to staff mentors for their commitment to the teams this round: Carl D’Souza, Shae Howe, Sally Spencer and Viv Ditcham.

Finally, it was lovely to witness the support for the St Bede’s Debaters in this round from Old Collegians and past debaters: Darragh Tate and Kye Mitchell, both currently adjudicating at DAV, and 2017 College Captain, Lucas Barrett. The Beda spirit is alive and well in debating circles!

Round 2 will be held at Brighton Grammar School on Wednesday, 28th March 2018 from 7.00pm.
