ACC

Triathalon

The triathlon team welcomed several new members for the 2017/2018 season with the boys starting training back in June last year. As the season approached, the training intensified and the boys worked in the skills necessary to compete. The focus for the season was the Victorian Schools Championship held at Elwood beach on the 4th March. This race also doubled as the ACC championship, which the team were determined to retain.

Choppy water met the boys as the entered the swim, which suited most of the team as many also compete in lifesaving. First out of the water was Riley Roberts in the 15-16 age group, Riley worked hard on the bike and then ran strongly to finish 4th (1st in ACC), he was closely followed home by Harry Bolton, who placed 6th (2nd in ACC). The team combined to win the ACC Triathlon title for the third year in a row.

The boys now enjoy a well-earned break before resuming training later this term. In a few weeks I will be inviting boys in year 8 and above to apply to join the team for the 2018/2019 season.

Athletics

The St Bede’s athletics team arrived at Lakeside stadium with dreams of winning the 2018 ACC championship. Having come very close over the previous two years, the team believed they were in a strong position to take home the title.

Consistency across all events would be the target of the day with all of the boys aiming to place in the top three in their events. This was always going to be a challenge and early in the day we were struggling back in 5th on the points table. There is nothing like a challenge to motivate boys, and as the day wore on, we slowly climbed the points table. For the past few years, it has been the 4x 100m relays that have decided the day’s winner. With this in mind, we were determined to finish strongly, and we certainly did this with four of our six teams coming home in second.

The run of the day must go to Nick Grech who ran the final leg of our 4x 400m relay, starting 40m behind the Parade College runner, Nick chased him all the way almost passing him in the final 50m narrowly losing out by .23 of a second. This determined run by Nick summed up the attitude of the entire team who gave everything they had on the day.

Congratulations must go to the following boys who claimed ACC titles on the day:

  • Alex Gibson - U14 1500m
  • Nick Grech - U16 Long Jump
  • Josh Miller - U16 1500m
  • Tom Murphy - U15 Triple Jump
  • Lachlan Parker - U14 Long Jump
  • Sam Smith - Senior Shot Put

At the conclusion of all of the events the team finished in second place overall, which was a fantastic performance. Unfortunately, Parade College were far too strong for everyone and were deserving winners on the day.

Overall Points:

1st                Parade College                    381

2nd              St Bede’s College                265.5

3rd               St Bernard’s College         260

4th               Whitefriars College          250.5

5th               De La Salle College            250

6th               Salesian College                  221

Special thanks must go to all of the staff who spent many hours preparing the team, Mr Fordham, Mr Murphy, Mr Jackson, Mr Martin, Mr Kelleher, Mr Rafferty, Mr Roberts and Mrs Burn.

Swimming

The ACC swimming championship always comes around very quickly at the start of the year, but this did not stop the team spending many hours in the pool preparing for the big night. This year we were lucky to have Rohan Taylor (VIC Swimming Head Coach & Australian Coach for the Commonwealth Games) and Nick Owen (VIS sports physiologist) work with the team for a couple of hours on starts, relay changes and race preparation. This experience was invaluable for the boys and certainly had a very positive effect on their racing on the night.

There was plenty of competition for places on the team this year, especially in the junior age groups. We arrived at the pool ready to race and the boys certainly represented the College with pride, the majority of the team swum personal best times on the night with several making massive improvements. It was our relay teams that shone on the night with most teams placing in the top 3, and our U15s excelled winning both relays. Our stand out swimmer on the night was Max Cronin in the U15 team who won all three of his individual events. At the end of the carnival, the team finished with eight first, ten second and six third places and our U15 team won their age group.

Overall, the College finished in 3rd place that is an outstanding result, considering the resources we have available.

Thanks must go to Sam Kelleher and Georgie Worland who assisted with the preparation and management of the team.

Lawn Bowls

The ACC Open Lawn Bowls Championships were recently held at the MCC Bowling Club in Hawthorn. This is the second year the ACC has organised such a competition and the first time

St Bede’s has entered teams.

Eight Year 12 boys represented St Bede’s on the day: Jack Langdon, Spencer O’Leary, Jackson Voss, Tom Wynd, Ryan Gray, Gerard Kelly, James Reece and Luke Burke.

The format of the day was three rounds of 5 ends, followed by semi-finals and grand-finals.

Our boys did very well considering their level of experience and finished 7th and 8th out of a field of 26 teams.

2nd XI Cricket Premiers

It is with great pride, that we can declare the 2nd XI Cricket Team premiers for 2018.

The majority of the squad remained from last year’s Grand Final side and were determine to obtain the allusive flag.

Perfect conditions awaited us at Russell Lucas Oval, Ringwood, against an undefeated Whitefriars side. Whitefriars won the toss, and elect to bowl in beautiful batting condition.

Zac Rattray and Sam Smith opened the batting, leading an early onslaught. Any poor deliveries were dispatched over the fence as Zac and Sam lead the score to 0/50 off 6 overs.

The dismissals of Zac for a quick fire 31 and Sam for hasty 36 afforded out middle order to press their case for runs. Kyle Frenchman, Hamish McCartney, Kai Colella, Jackson Gillespie & Baeden Maurice all played excellent team roles to help push the score to 6/149 off 20 overs.

Confident that the total could be defended,  Ed McGarry, Daniel Passante, Tom McCauley, Will Clifton, Michael Bartholomeusz, Hamish McCartney and Rowan Torkington bowled exceptionally well to restrict the opposition to be all out for 111.

It was just reward for a group of cricketers would have been together for two years.

The following players represented the 2nd XI Cricket team with aplomb through the 2018 Season: Hamish McCartney, Zac Rattray, Baeden Maurice, Rowan Torkington, Nathan Jane, Sam Smith, Phillip George, Kyle Frenchman, Daniel Passante, Jackson Gillespie, Tom McCauley, Leo Grenville, Tom Kercheval, Harrison Skadiang, James Hiam, Michael Batholomeusz, Harrison Murie, Ed McGarry, Will Clifton and Kai Collela.
