Year 11 Legal Studies Court Excursion

On May 1, 2018, our two Year 11 Legal Studies classes went on an excursion to Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. We traveled to the city by train and were accompanied by Ms. Lochery, Mr. Bourke, and Mr. Kelliher. We arrived at around 10:00 AM, but there was a large media presence outside the court for a very important case, so we had to wait over an hour to enter the court. When we first entered the Magistrates’ Court, we had to go through security to make sure we did not have any bags or weapons on us. The court was very secure in making sure that nothing could get into the court as they scanned our clothes, we had to walk through a security door, and finally they scanned our body with handheld body scanners. Once in the foyer, we waited to be divided into groups by teacher to go to the designated courtrooms. The foyer was reasonably large, with old-style architecture that was very formal. Once upstairs and in small groups, we went into some of the many courtrooms and listened to numerous cases. Prior to the proceedings, some members of both classes were given opportunities to have a short tour of the County Court. We wrapped up at around lunchtime, before heading back via train arriving at Mentone Station. Thank you to Mr Kelliher and Ms Lochery for their time and expertise.
