Debating

Round Four

DAV competition was held on the 05/05/18 at Brighton Grammar, and was a good night for the

St Bede’s College Debating Squad, winning four debates from seven. B Grade were intent on arguing that the Celebrities should be banned from participating in politics, whilst C grade grappled with the issue of whether or not we should ban home schooling. D Grade argued that employers should adopt a four day week…..a very popular idea with the audience on the night!

Results:

B Grade: Jeremy Mann, Dillon Bulman and Mattias Seisdedos, defeated by Firbank Grammar School 1 by one point. This official result pends an adjudication complaint lodged by St Bede’s College.

 C Grade:

SBC 1: Elijah Barrett, William Bunn and Flynn Morley, were unlucky to be defeated by one point by Brighton Grammar School 2.

SBC 2: Jacob Barry, Jack Pooley and Will Devlin, defeated Brighton Grammar School 1 by two points. Best Speaker, Will Devlin.

SBC 3: Sam Murray, Jack Dawson and James Kalpakoff, defeated St Leonard’s 1 by one point. Well done to James on a very competent debating debut. Best Speaker: Sam Murray

D Grade:

SBC 1: Ben Martinelli, Tomas Cooling and Elijah McEvoy, defeated Kostka Hall 3. Well done to this strong team and their mentor, Mr. DeSouza, they remain undefeated to date and are a force to be reckoned with! Best Speaker awarded to Elijah McEvoy.

SBC 2: Harry Griffin, Monty Young and Ethan Fletcher, defeated by Star of The Sea 1, by one point.

SBC 3: Ben Tilbrook, Aaron Nowlan and Ben Uheara, defeated St Leonard’s 1.

At this stage of the season, all of our teams are competitively debating and placed for continued success, D Grade 1 especially so, as the race for a place in finals heats up. Thank you to the staff mentors who so generously give of their time and their talents to support the program:

Carl De Souza, Shae Howe, Sally Spencer and Viv Ditcham.

Round 5 takes place on Tuesday, 24 July  2018 at Brighton Grammar School.
