Annual Young Leaders' Breakfast

On Wednesday morning we hosted the Annual Young Leaders’ Breakfast, bringing together school captains and student leaders from around Geelong to work together to ‘Be The Change’ our local and global communities need.

The keynote speaker, Clementine Ford, spoke of how inspiring young people’s action against climate change has been and how to keep finding your voice when people around you are trying to silence you. She highlighted that it’s very easy to dress like a leader without ever acting like a leader and said that real leadership was about empowering, uniting and disrupting. Clementine posited that the real test of leadership is whether you are willing to question and disrupt the systems people generally accept because ‘that’s the way they have always been’. When asked how you continue to do what is right in the face of so much hate, her advice was to read, listen and watch; that too often leadership is equated with speaking, but it is so much more than that.

Highlights of the morning certainly included:

  • Watching Nick Young, Aimee Wookey and Kai Purton (of Year 9) speak about what leadership means to them. All really different and immensely powerful stories, but I must highlight the courage that Kai showed in sharing some of his personal challenges as a way of encouraging others to do the same.
  • College Captain, Bailey Kitchen showing what Clementine would consider true leadership in asking how young people can find ways to express themselves and their diversity when they are governed by uniform policies and school rules.
  • Reading the students ‘pledges’ of how they are going to ‘Be The Change’ in the future.

Thanks to everyone who was a part of the organising team and to those students who spoke on the morning.
