Bins & recycling HUB at Somerville

At SPS we are so proud to have reduced our landfill waste by over 70% in just 7 months, we have been learning about waste sorting and making sure we get the right thing in the right bin. It is very important that our recycling bins are used only for recyclable items. There have been a lot of coffee cups found in our skip bins over the past fortnight and these are not recyclable. Contaminating the recycling bins can mean the whole skip bin is taken to landfill instead of being recycled.

We are adding to our recycling hub, located in the hallway outside the Enviro room. You will find a free book box for your children to take books home to keep, tablet blister recycling box and the bread bag box. Inside the Enviro room you will find a place to recycle batteries and plastic bread bag tags. We will update you as we increase our recycling capabilities over the coming term.

MUSHROOMS -

Our grade 3 students are eagerly awaiting the growth of their mushrooms. We planted the compost on the mycelium nearly 2 weeks ago and it is over the coming weeks we expect to see the mushrooms start to form. We encourage all students to get creative with mushroom recipes at home. For some easy to cook mushroom recipe ideas you can go to - bit.ly/kidsmushroomrecipes

SEEC sock recycling -

Our SEEC representatives have been busily packing socks to send to Upparel to have them recycled. Did you know the average Australian throws out about 23 kilograms of textile waste each year? Most of this ends up in landfill where it could take 200 years, or more, to decompose. We will be collecting washed, unwanted socks until the end of the year so keep cleaning out those sock drawers! We have posted off approximately 15 kilograms of socks so far, amazing effort.

Bread Bag Recycling - LAST CHANCE!

August is the last month we will be collecting bread bags as part of the Wonder Recycling Rewards program. After this date we encourage you to drop off your soft plastics and bread bags at Woolworths or Coles as part of the RedCycle soft plastic recycling.

Oral care collection

Our school has signed up for the Terracycle/ Colgate Community Garden challenge. We need your used oral care packaging to earn us votes, the more product packages we collect the more votes we earn, the better our chances of winning a community garden! It’s easy to get involved, simply bring ANY BRAND completed oral care products (image below) and we will collect them and send them away for recycling. Bring them to the Enviro room until October

Tablet blister pack collection

Our school is continuing to add solutions to waste in our community. We have recently purchased a Terracycle recycling bin to collect tablet blister packs to be sent away for recycling. If you have any tablet blister packs at your home you can send them to school with your child and they can drop them into the Enviro room collection box. NO MEDICATION IS TO BE LEFT IN THE BLISTER PACKS.

This project is funded by the Mornington Peninsula Shire Climate Action Grant.
